Has Duffy's voice always been that annoying?
I've just heard her new single, and to be honest, the sound of her voice had the effect of nails down a blackboard to me! It was so squwarky and nasal, I had to lower the radio volume.
I don't remember Mercy or Warwick Avenue having the same effect on me. |

Marmite indeed - I am hating it. I'd rather she sung normally.

I was like her biggest fan back in 2008, and Rockferry was my album of that year, but I can't actually listen to Well Well Well, it's awful

Yes it has. For some reason it works on a few of her songs but in general it is truly awful.

I liked her first album. I find that when she sings live her voice gets worse, it's as if she's trying too hard.

Yeah, that's what it sounds like on this new single of hers. I hope to God the rest of the album isn't as bad.

Yes - I saw her singing 'Well well well' on Later with Jools and just wanted her to shut up. It was dire.
I liked some of the tracks on Rockferry quite a lot, but if this single is anything to go by I shall be giving her latest release a very wide berth. |

Yeah, she's always sounded like Orville the duck. Hideous.

my mum has her first album. She played it all the time in the car. Personally, I can't stand Duffy's voice.

It is truly awful - the intro is TORTURE. Sounds like someone's hammering a cat.

Good grief! Actually giving it a listen now and the intro sounds as if it's been tampered with to make it like a spoof!
She's bordering on chipmunk!! "Waeyil, waeyil, waeyil!!!!" |

Wonder if she'll suffer a second album slump? I haven't been too impressed with her live vocals.

I commented on another thread about "Well Well Well" that I thought Duffy's vocals were sounding very squeaky a few days ago. I'm reassured that others have found them to be grating on "Well Well Well" as I thought I was simply being a miserable git!
I agree with Rubrical's comments and also wondered whether they had decided to play around with the vocals in the studio and something had gone a bit wrong. However, it probably is just a technique she sometimes uses as Red+Blooded explained. Either way, I don't think contributors to this forum will be the only ones that find it irritating. I think a re-recording might be in order!

Rockferry sold 6.5 million worldwide for the very good reason that it contains a lot of tracks which are going to be classics - ie still played in 50 years time.
I've heard most of the songs on the new album sung live and there are certainly similar classic tracks there as well. Duffy's voice has always teetered on the brink between the brilliant - Syrup&Honey, I'm Scared, Smoke Without Fire, Save it for your Prayers etc and the dire - the atrocious Coke ad obviously. At the moment I'd say those who are critical of her voice have a very good point. She's singing way too high. At the same time I remember that there was a lot of similar criticism of her voice with Mercy and the first album and of course she went on to sell millions. |

I don't think Mercy affected me quite as much as this one, possibly (well...almost certainly) because it was a better song and better melody. The backing music of those songs matched her style, and maybe masked the harshness of her voice.
This latest song doesn't afford her that. I can't see it doing great, which is a shame. I like Duffy, it's brilliant having artists who actually write and sing their own stuff - it should be the yard stick for all youngsters rather than the X-Factor crap being rammed down their throats. |

I mean when she first came out I didn't really hear many negative things said about her or anything. Then after the coke ad and now with the new single, it's rare I read anything positive about her. |

The fact that when she first hit the scene columnists and reviewers repeatedly compared her hideous squawk to Dusty Springfield - the finest soul singer England ever produced - still makes me ****ing seeth.

I love her Rockferry album and think her vocals are ok on the majority of it. But then she brought out that Rain On Your Parade and I didn't like her singing on it, nor that Coke advert. It's as if her vocals have got worse since Rockferry - more affected and nasally. Not too keen on Well Well Well either, although it may grow on me. But I honestly don't think her vocals were as bad on Rockferry than they became later!

I never realized how annoying her voice was till Well well well. I actually had a good listen to Rockferry a little while ago for the first time in ages and it's not actually the fantastic album people raved about back in 2008. I am glad Adele stole her thunder at the grammys.
