My puppy Twiglet

I just wanted to introduce all you pet lovers to my Shih tzu puppy Twiglet. He's now thirteen weeks and already owns my heart (and life!)

I wanted to ask for advice, because he point blank refuses to go to the toilet outside, he will hold himself for the whole time we go for a walk (however long that walk is) and then relieve himself on a puppy pad when we get back home. Can anyone help me?

OMG he's gorgeous.

Can't help you with the toileting prob really though. My puppy was still weeing and pooping indoors until she was almost 8 months, but she did go outside if she could, it was only overnight she couldn't seem to hold herself or if I didn't leap up and let her out of the door in time.

I didn't use the pads though, I used newspaper, but she rarely used it, preferred the door mat. You could try the "no" tactic and pick him up mid wee and put him outside, maybe put a puppy pad outside the back door. Good luck.

i 2nd the moving the puppy pad to the door, then out the door, then to where you want him to go. if the puppy pad isnt inside he may get the hint to do it outside. also, if he poops inside, maybe pick up the poop and drop it out on the grass where you want him to go so his smell is there already. he is gorgeous, love that 2nd pic

I would get rid of any puppy pads/newspaper as the pup is getting/got into the mind set that that is where toileting 'must' happen and is doing what they think they should do, holding it until they can get to their toilet, the 'pad' provided where I imagine you praise him afterwards. Pads/newspaper confuse puppies. Start again. Take pup into garden/out for walks very often and use a word to encourage toileting, wait until toileting happens and praise/treat/praise/treat. When accidents happen inside, ignore!!

He's so cute! I second Josephine's advice, you need to point at what he's done and firmly say "no" when he toilets indoors and then immediately place him outside for about 10 minutes. Persevere and he'll soon get the message. If you do go down the route of gradually moving the puppy pad outside rather than going cold turkey then make sure that you eventually take it away as otherwise he'll still associate it as his toilet (albeit an outside one) rather than using the grass when he's not at home.
