That would be a good device to try. It works the same as the Vonets, in that it converts an ethernet signal into wifi and has everything contained within it's hardware/software so doesn't need the device to which it is attached to run anything or have any drivers, other than having an ethernet port.

sorry..

I should keep out of technical things which I don't understand. Probably another stupid question, but does the DS have a powered USB from which to run the Netgear adapter?

Would this sort of thing be right for connecting the DS?

Those should work OK, a good price too.

The DS does have a powered USB but I'd be cautious about using it.

When I tried powering a Vonets VAP11G WIFI Bridge from the DS USB port the DS would crash after a few minutes of iPlayer use. If the Vonets was used with an external power supply everything was fine.

Another person had the same experience with a Vonets Bridge so there may be a problem powering things from the USB port.

I had no problem powering the Netgear bridge from the USB port - worked perfectly - no extra power cable to mains - no extra spaghetti!

Although the DS provides the usual 5 volts on USB, be aware that the USB spec allows for varying levels of current. It's likely that the Vonets is trying to draw more current than the DS can provide, resulting in crashes, but that the Netgear device has lower requirements so is within the capabilities of the DS.

I thought the spec was a maximum of 500mA over USB?

Can anyone help me? I bought the devices I linked to earlier, and they turned up today. I paired them, and that seemed to go fine, and then connected them up - one to my router, and one to the DS. Now the lights are blinking on the devices to say they are transmitting information, but the DS is seemingly not connecting to display the iPlayer and whanot. I go into the settings, and there isn't anything info listed under the network settings. I've tried rebooting everything, but can't seem to get any further. Help! I did try the Wiki, but there isn't any help related.

Could it be my MAC address filtering? I've tried to find a MAC address for the DS, but there doesn't seem to be one. I'm not sure I even need it for what is essentially a wired connection. I'm at a total loss.

Never mind, sorted now. It was the MAC Address filtering. Once I'd disabled it, the box popped up with iPlayer. It then added the full network settings to the menu, so I could take the proper MAC address and input it into my router settings.

DS on iPlayer! Cool!

All Ethernet devices have a MAC address, so that is a possibility.

Have you tried replacing a wired or wireless connection to an existing PC, to see if you can get that to work?

Edit: D'oh!

Thanks anyway.

All we need now is 4OD and ITV Player. I won't hold my breath...

Standard USB 2 ports yes, most devices that need more power connect to two USB ports.

But the USB spec was amended in 2007 to allow up to 900mA (downstream charging ports that can also support data transfer) and also allowed for dedicated charging ports where devices could draw up to 1.5A but there's no data transfer.

It could be the Vonets requires more power than the DS is designed to supply (as it sticks to the standard USB 2 specs of max 500mA), whereas the Netgear is happier with the lower current and so works. Just a thought really, it's the only thing I can think of it as to why the Netgear appears to work fine but the Vonets doesn't.

So when did Iplayer come to the digital stream? mine is packed away at the moment due to me not bothering with TV, but useful to know just in case.

Not sure of the exact date but I’ve been using it for quite a few months now to watch Click.

I think it may have been in the November 11 update when the DS was enabled then it was the wait for the BBC which came a few months back, but hold me to my words.

Know what you mean about TV at the moment as I have a 1 Tb HHD connected to my DS and HDR Freesat receiver and both are getting low on series and films built up over the past two years.

It was made available via firmware release 4.14 at the end of February.

V4.13 from Sept 2011 was iPlayer-enabled (and could access the test stream that was made available for testers). V4.14 was released when the BBC had completed all of their testing and had finally signed off the DigitalStream (I think by adding it to their list of authorised devices).

I must admit I get a bit feed up with all these Freeview and Freesat tuners needing updating in what seems like every five minutes so I tend to forget quite quickly any updates I have done.

I can’t remember the Feb one but as its a few minutes to do I have probably forgotten about it. I try not to updates these things anyway unless I am having problems with them and the DS has been fine for me in the two years I have had it but I do get the iPlayer from the DS so I must have done that one.

Mossy is right. The DS supported IPlayer from September last year, but the BBC changed the goalposts in amending the specs and the DS had to undergo more testing. The February update made it fully compatible and the BBC then activated the stream in March this year.

I doubt very much well see ITV Player, 4OD and Demand Five on the current DS. It's more likely well see a new box sometime in the next twelve months that is a YouView certified device instead.

That explains it then, I have not updated the box for a while, maybe I should unpack the box, and update it, just in case Digital stream goes under. I presume it can still be updated via USB.

Problem is I can't find my USB stick.

What a shock, the BBC moving the goal posts. I wonder how many times they will move it with you view and people with boxes they buy now find that they can access something at a later date because the BBC move the goal posts.

We been stung with Freeview before.

Except that in the case of the DS, it was never the case of goalposts being moved resulting in access being removed, it just required a few firmware changes to bring it up to the latest D-Book spec in order for the BBC to pass it. In other words, they set the bar higher for it to get approval. Without that approval the BBC would not switch on the access.

it was never the case that access that had previously been available was then subsequently removed. And nowhere has it been suggested that the BBC has, or will do something like that.

This is the BBc we are talking about, they done it before with their Freeview partners, so they can do it again.

Anyway, i will unpack the box at the weekend and update it, there is no need to plug a aerial into it i doubt and if there is I can borrow my next door neighbours

What are you rambling on about?

Given your hatred of TV, why bother? If you are worried about "missing" an update which you are entitled to but clearly don't need, you can simply download it and stash it somewhere.
