What does your pet think you are?

“What does my cat think I am? In other words, in his brain, what has he classified me as?

I've had my cat, Charlie, since he was 10 weeks old. I'm curious as to how he classifies and labels me in his mind, although I do understand that of course he doesn't think in words.

For example, does he understand that I am a species distinct from himself, or does he see me as a giant, furless cat?

What a fascinating question! I guess it's impossible to know the answer. I'd like to think my cat doesn't regard me as a giant furless cat but perhaps she does. Do you reckon your pet thinks you are like them or something else?

"His mum, obviously!! "

LOL - great answer!

I guess a cat knows a human isn't a cat. It can tell we're much bigger. And if we give them food and shelter they will know we're not a threat. But other than that it's hard to know if they see as as like other animals or can see us as different to animals. Can a cat or dog really know what a human is? Perhaps. I wonder if we acted like cats they would think we were cats!

The question is, does a cat know it's a cat?

Mine sees me as a play/feeding/comfort thing. I am under no illusions that she is with me for my sparkling wit. She just knows she is onto a good thing, so stays. (She climbed through the window, settled herself onto my bed one night and has now been with me just over three years) I do know that she gets frustrated when she can't make herself understood. I think that cats are just clever and have worked out that those big things are generally kind and will give them what they need - food and comfort.

I know that when my two were kittens the boy would watch me drinking tea and would try to pick up the cup by placing his paw around the handle. Very, very funny and cute to watch. Human maybe?

He also used to wash my hair as I think he thought I was one of the pride. Cat maybe?

He still makes incredible eye contact - he watches intently and seems quite in-tune.

Whilst his sister is very much a cat (hunting, pouncing, playing, cuddling), he is a real people person. She likes people too but if there were the choice of a mouse or human to interact with, she'd go for the mouse and he'd roll on his back with his belly in the air, giving whoever it was a cheeky look.

Soo, he either thinks I'm a cat (although I'm certain he knows I'm different from him and his sister) or he thinks he's semi human.

I still think they must both think I'm a severely disabled because I only use two legs instead of four...and have to bend and groan when I climb up to shut the window. "Why can't she just jump up like us?"

Fell asleep on the settee last night and when i woke up i had 4 of them curled around me. One kitten asleep on me and one cat on the arm of the chair. So i would say a bed. I didnt feel a think of them getting on either.

I like to believe my cats see me as 'daddy' but its probably more like 'the food supplier'

A dog probably sees you as the alpha-whatever in its pack which is why it obeys your commands if you train it, whereas a cat (which is allowed out of the home) probably views you as someone it is convenient to stay with.

To my two little fancy goldfish I think I'm a 'kindly, interesting food tree which keeps us clean, even if some of the branches on the food tree never fall off, no matter how many times we try to eat them'.

Those branches being my fingers or arms.

This happened to me recently too. After coming home from work i fell asleep lying on the sofa and woke up with two kittens asleep on me. Considering most of the time it sounds like two elephants thundering around our house they can sure be quiet when they need to!

The way my Impossible Princess used to mew and chirp and paddle my stomach one would think I was her mother.

I'd really like to think that my cats see me as some sort of mother figure. Like stud u like says, my three guys like to knead on me (usually when I am wearing thin cotton clothing - ouch!!).

I actually think that my cats see my as some strange relative who is to be tolerated. They find my behaviour towards them mildly amusing, especially when I am cradling them on their backs and talking 'baby talk' to them. They seem to smile indulgently, much as I would to a favourite elderly aunt at Xmas who has had a few sweet sherries!

All this said, I love my furry boys

I think my dogs see us as the best hunters in the world as we come home with our bags full of food and always something for them !

The dude with the food.

Nah, that's a bit harsh. I think "friend" is probably the only one I can guarantee.
