How does a Toppy fast forward & rewind & will it stutter?
Two very simple questions from someone thinking of buying a TF5800:-
1... What is the FF/RW button behaviour? What I want is the following behaviour:- each press of the FF button increases the FF speed, then while FF'ing, each press of the RW button slows down the FF speed ie button press.....FF speed FF..................x2 >> FF..................x4 >> FF..................x6 >> RW.................x4 >> RW.................x2 >> Would installing the Windfaster patch affect this behaviour? If the Toppy does not support my desired behaviour, is there a TAP or patch to add it to the default FF/RW buttons? Please don't tell me about ad skipping buttons, I hate them, I find them disorientating. I want to FF at high speed over most of the ads, then slow down the FF'ing as I get closer to the programme start. My current Sagem DTR-67250 does not show my desired behaviour. Pressing RW at any FF speed instantly puts the box to x4 RW. 2... stuttering/glitching My Vestel T835 shows the desired FF behaviour described in (1). However the T835 puts a video and audio stutter onto a recording when the unit is working hard. So if I am recording 2 programmes and watching a third and start monkeying with the FF/RW keys, one or other recording will stutter when I get round to viewing it. Annoying. Does the Toppy do this? Is it stutter free no matter how hard I hammer the FF/RW buttons... or the EPG... or the menus.... etc? How about with Windfaster installed? My basic problem is I have 2 boxes:- the Sagem is a pain to use, but stutter free. The Vestel is a delight to use, but stutters. I want an uber-box which is easy to use, but never stutters on playback. Is the Toppy gonna be that box, or will I end up with 3 imperfect boxes and much frustration?? Thanks in advance! |

I have the standard recommended patches and Mystuff. I use the adskip to skip the vast majority of the ads, then press FF once to get 8x speed (or is it 16?), then press it again to slow it down.

Two very simple questions
FF/REW is a weakness on my T5800 with MyStuff6.2, which only has x2, x4 and x6 FF and x1, x2 and x3 REW, but I haven't tried a specific TAP for it. Quote:
FF/RW button behaviour... "each press of the FF button increases the FF speed, then while FF'ing, each press of the RW button slows down the FF speed"...
Pressing the REW whilst FF'ing @ x6 takes it back to x1 ![]() Toppy's skips are 2-min, 1-min and 30-sec forward and only 15-sec back. Very little, if anything, causes stuttering on a Toppy's recordings, certainly not FF/REW in my experience. I have a Vestel T825 (have also had T810 and T816) and I agree with you re "delight to use". I am very surprised that you find the 30-second and 2-minute skips "disorientating", I wouldn't be without them - I am furious that other brands of PVR, including Topfield, can't be so sensible. My HD PVR offers 30-second and ONE HOUR skips Insane!You'll get more people with expertise on www.toppy.org.uk, they wrote the TAPs and know all about them and they're very helpful. parthena |

I also hate those add skipping buttons too... on my Toppy I use a TAP called FastSkip which I couldn't live without. Basically you use the forward and back buttons to 'home in' on where you want to be, as the time skipped reduces every time. It takes a while to get the hang of, but I find it great for skipping adverts etc as I find Fast Forward to be very slow on the Toppy.
I believe FastSkip is no longer available, but has been replaced by 'Skip it' which is available here... http://personal.inet.fi/private/tap/skipit.html |

@parthena
Thanks very much I've got a Toppy now, £75 refurb FF and RW actually not bad at all, x6 is pretty decent, does the job, the picture is stable and so on. There is a firmware hack for faster speeds but I'll probably avoid that. A single ad jump (3 mins) plus FF at x2 or x4 is quite a useable way to get past ads, there's no audio and it's not too disorienting. Vestel has locked up once or twice, also it's getting really slow now the library is half full. Still glitching of course! ![]() cheers now |

That's not fair, I don't have a 3-min skip ![]() parthena |

With MyStuff 6.1 I found that setting jumps:
P1 = Red -90 sec P2 = Green -20 sec P3 = Yellow +60 sec P4 = Blue +120 sec Allows good control for skipping adverts. As for the FF & FW feature: if you wish the [Wf] patch changes functionality: http://www.toppy.org.uk/~r2-d2/patches.html The Wind Faster [Wf] patch enables faster fast forward and fast rewind, and it also enables the hidden fourth speeds. The internal speeds are changed to 2x, 4x, 8x and 16x (with rewind speeds similar). However, the indicated speeds in the roundels are unchanged at 2x, 4x, 6x, and the previously hidden 8x. The actual speeds depend on the bitrate of the recording, with the internal 16x being roughly equivalent to 12x on a normal UK Freeview channel. And if you don't like the Roundels that come with a FF ![]() The Quick Roundels [R2], [R3] and [R5] patches makes the roundels disappear twice, three times or 5 times faster, The No Roundels [R0] patch eliminates them completely. Does another PVR offer some much flexability?.....I think not! I hope my post has been of use

Thanks, MrF
I might even get around to reinstalling all my Toppy software and fishing out the USB cable one o' these days - it would be worth it just for the "no-roundels" fix ![]() parthena |

I have TF5800 with bog standard Topfield Freeview+ firmware (the 5.14.09 version not recommended on Toppy users site). This does 2x 4x 8x and 16x as standard. I've had few problems with it, the occasional series link missing a recording, but usually when several are triggered to go off together and I never set up series link for Five as you get all the repeats (seems to be common to loads of PVRs so probably Five is at fault here). Otherwise it is a solid PVR.
Hoping to upgrade to an HD box soon but I doubt we'll find one quite as flexible as the Toppy. I may even load MyStuff one day, but don't feel the need to at the moment. |
