Hayley is indeed fab-u-lous. She does a stirling job week after week covering all styles of singing.

She was fantastic. I had it on in the background while I was cleaning and thought that they had got someone else in to sing it. I was stunned when I watched it back later and realised it was Hayley, absolutely wonderful, she's easily the best of the singers anyway.

Sorry to rain on this parade but...

That performance of the Habanera from Carmen was awful

I believe she was attempting to sing it in the original French - but she didn't bother to find out how to pronounce the words.

I know the aria well (having been in the opera and having directed it) - and it was unintelligible.

She would have been much better singing in English - as attempting the original was a mistake.

Decent voice - but a lack of preparation seriously let her down

Come on, this is SCD, not the English National Opera! I doubt that many, outside of opera buffs, had a clue what the words were supposed to be anyway. I certainly didn't and thorough enjoyed the performance.

Agreed. I turned the sound down. The again, I am an opera fan so I might hear it differently.

What a load of crap ! ur in your own egotistical world. You may know a little about Opera .....but you haven't got a clue on how the show works.
Don't you think the singers would choose WHAT & HOW they perform a song if they could ? they are told what to do.
If Hayley was as bad as you think I doubt she would be asked to return year after year ? I am almost sure that if she were able to choose the language..........as 2/3 of her relatives are from Italy......it would of been in Italian !

An unsuccessful person makes a bad critic

Yes, I agree, wish the camera had focused on her rather than the dancers . I wasn't taking any notice of the dance, just listening to Hayley singing

Sing the Habañera in English?? Are you serious??????? you must have have been in the back row of the chorus at Sadlers Wells, then.
Bizet wrote it in French, and it is sung in French the world over, including by singers like me who will never make it to Covent Garden. Hayley mispronounced the e- grave accent in "préfère", true, but I've heard it a lot worse in opera performances sung by busty Eastern Europeans or skeletic Americans.
French is a difficult language for foreigners to speak (which I do every day)and really hard to sing convincingly. Most people don't.

Hayley had to sing this world-famous aria with a little backing band instead of Bizet's excellent orchestration, and had to croon into a mike rather than sing con belto as most mezzos do.
And there was the usual gibbons out of the zoo screeching from the audience, which would have had Callas in tears.

So, all in all, with little rehearsal and in very trying conditions, and following Dave Arch's baton as Felicity was late with some of her steps, I think Hayley did really well.

I too thought the pronounciation was toe curlingly awful BUT I thought the performance was brilliant. Truely astounding. The best vocals ever on SCD.

Brilliant post Dorabella. Thank you. Hayley was amazing and fully deserves all the praise.

I wonder why the SCD team did not go for the English version of this song from Carmen Jones, same music, different words.

Problem of copyright, most likely. Some 20th cent music is really wrapped up in performance rights.
And is the beat the same?

Hayley Sanderson says, "As for the French, it’s a language I have never looked at. My boyfriend's Mother lives in France and her and her French husband were kind enough to record themselves speaking it for me. This helped but the phrasing of the words while singing it can’t be phrased the way you would while just speaking so the rest I had to guess apart from copying the version by Katherine Jenkins I was given".

All of the music performed on SCD is 20th or 21st Century, so the copyright problems apply throughout.

Hayley; you did really well. Opera singers spend years perfecting the French accent which is a challenge to everyone. I wouldn't use Katherine Jenkins's version to copy though; her pronounciation of French (and Italian) isn't the best. xx

JVS, many thanks for the link. I was able to post a complimentary message there, and hope she she doesn't encounter any more criticism. Had no idea this was her first attempt at singing in French. What a baptism of fire.

I am a professional opera singer, and I'm almost scared to stick my head above the parapet, but I'd also like to add a few words.

Okay, Hayley's French wasn't perfect (and yes, don't copy any languages from KJ!), but she sings in an impossibly diverse range of styles every week within the space of the same show, and nails pretty much every one. She's a very versatile singer, and that's pretty rare.

Like all people who are good at their jobs, you only really notice when not every element is in place.
