This probably is because of Aiden's performance of the song on X Factor but it's a brilliant song. I've just downloaded it and it brings back memories. Such a powerful song.

Sinead has done some great songs and am pleased it's back in the charts.

I love this song.

The emotion in her voice is incredible, I'd like to see someone like Beyonce do that now.

Looking back at what was popular at the time, she makes Mariah et al. look so plastic.

Bloody public...it was the Prince version, not Sinead (as utterly amazing as it is).

Beautiful video too. I love those lashes... and when she starts crying... Simple but stunning.

I found this song a lot more sad after I found out she recorded it after her son (i think) died.

Yeah me too. Although I don't think this song is about that in particular..sounds very about a 'lost love one' however maybe it's even more sad that he moved on whilst they had so much history together (possibly the miscarriage etc).

My mum told me she recorded a really beautiful song about a child she lost but I forgot the rest of the story, she sings from the heart.

It really winds me up how ignorant/sheep-like the British public can be when it comes to music.

Still, at least a good song is getting recognition even if it isn't the right version! I don't really like the Prince version, to be honest.

TBH most people know the Sinead version so that's probably why downloaders instantly went for that version-which, let's be honest-is the better version. I love it.

Not many people know it was a Prince song, though, so they'd automatically get the most well known version.

Sheeple come out en-mass during X-Factor.

This is true...though you'd think they'd put two and two together since it was American Classics after all...not tearjerking covers by bald irish ladies.

Yup. Prince probably has no idea it was performed on the show and he probably just get royalties sent to him willy-nilly.

It's re-entering the chart this week?

But I thought the kids nowadays wouldn't by good, "real" music.

My Dad who was born in the 60s didnt even know it was a Prince song, and neither do I. I always think of Sinaed's version.

So very understandable that as its my Dads favourite ever song, he doesn't even know the actual original and I think that maybe millions of people don't know Prince sang it.

I didn't know it was a Prince song until my flatmate educated me. I was asking him why they'd sing a Sinead O'Connor song on American Anthem week and saying that Louis would probably get the rule book out lol. Listened to Prince's and prefer Sinead's. If that makes me one of the sheeple, then I am more than happy to baaaaa along with everyone else

I dont think Prince likes when other versions are better than his (thats why he blocks Youtube vids), I LOVE Chaka Khan's version of "I Feel For You" more than Prince's.

I read he blocks YouTube videos because he appreciates quality and thinks 2 minutes of a song recorded on a crappy mobile phone camera is an insult to his work.

Didn't the tears come about over her mother and the abuse she suffered at her hands and then her mother dying.

She said herself it was this line that set her off...
"All the flowers that you planted, Mama/in the back yard/All died when you went away,"
You can see the pain in her eyes when she sang it, brilliant song, her version is easily the best IMO.

he blocked youtube videos because he didn't get paid for it. he had a real issue with them making millions from other peoples work

he doesn't like cover versions of his music either, with rare exception, such as chaka khan and alicia keys, who he both likes and considers friends of sorts (he worked with chaka a bit and covered one of her songs on an early demo tape). the thing is, most covers of his songs are awful, you should hear the crap on the "tribute" albums of his songs. some sound like they've been recorded by a deaf person who's never heard of prince before

Even fewer people know that it was a song written by Prince for one of his project bands "The Family". I had their album way before I heard any of the other versions, and its charm still shines through for me, way beyond every other version.

That's true. Prince never recorded (or at least released) his version of the song until after Sineads version, but yes he did write it for The Family, whose version is totally different from Sineads. Sineads is the best version by a mile imo.

sineads version is awful

the original version was written and recorded by prince on all vox and most instruments, his lead vocals were replaced by protoge st paul peterson, and removed from the master tape. prince was recording on average two completed new songs a day at the time, so literally given them away. he started playing the song live when sinead had a hit, and a live recording was included on the hits cd

the original version isn't much different to sineads version, other than drums were added, but there is an unreleased version by the family with drums that were very similar, and makes sineads version sound like a clone, just sung worse (when she hits that note "all the flowers..." it sounds awful). the video is awful too. i prefered her earlier stuff
