Interesting that on a cold day Lewis, a guy with a reputation for being hard on tyres (rightly or wrongly), managed to be so much better than Jenson.
I wonder if Button struggled to get heat into his tyres?

Also, I wonder if Lewis' comments on Friday were a bluff or if Buttons position is more indicative of where they both thought that's where the McLaren was likely to be and Lewis just pulled it out of the bag?
I bet Jenson will be looking hard at Lewis' telemetry from quali' for the rest of the day.

Scuderia Toro Rosso driver Sebastien Buemis has been disqualified from qualifying because of fuel irregularity.

Sebastien Buemi who qualifyed 16th will now start from either the back of the grid or from the pit lane.

Awesome lap from Lewis, never expected McLaren to be so close to pole this weekend although I suppose this track is suited to McLaren with many low speed corners in sectors one and three where Lewis was fastest.

Not sure what happened Jenson, he seemed to be way off Lewis' pace on Friday too but I don't think his quali performance was representative.

Lewis seemed pissed off when talking about his chances for this weekend so I think it was genuine but I do think he thought he'd be closer than he was letting on but not that close!! His reaction when he got out of the car seemed to be one of shock too. I'd say their true pace was halfway between Lewis and Jenson's times.

A wet race is expected tomorrow which should be good for McLaren...

Yeah the team said they had to change his entire fuel system as he had a fuel pressure problem on Friday and they think that a chemical in the new system contaminated the fuel which caused the irregularity.

Interestingly Lewis was praised for a precise and calm lap so it wasn't so much his alleged ragged edge driving that got him so well placed.

I don't think Lewis was on the "ragged edge" during that lap.
I was just speculating that his driving style (slightly later braking, more aggresive turn-in etc) might have generated more heat in the tyres compared with Buttons smoother style.

One slightly random thought...
It kinda just as well that Vettel is cleaning up in the WDC.
If it ends up like last year, where a bunch of drivers are separated by a few points at the end , people might get a bit upset that McLaren were, effectively, hobbled in the Brit' race.
Hopefully (kinda) the final result will mean that won't make a difference one way or the other.
Alonso, Hamilton, Webber and Button now have to win roughly 10 points more than Vettel per race to win the WDC now.

as expected, lewis leads at the start!
no surprises there, lets hope that rubbish mclaren dont let him down!

I hope they haven't compromised Lewis' race by short-fuelling him.
Surely anybody with half a brain would realise that, from the front, Hamilton is going to be pushing all the way through the race?

thats the sad thing for lewis, he has to deal with a lot intangibles, people just cant realise how good he actually is.

wow great battle between webber and lewis.

Seems the DRS zone isn't yielding a lot of overtakes(thankfully for lewis imo )

Hi guys, not a regular here but have loved F1 for many years. A question, how do the drivers know if they're within one second of the car in front to deploy DRS? Surely it can't be activated remotely or the driver wouldn't be prepared.

Good question, maybe their radio tells them.

The cars have a transponder on-board which beams a signal to a computer when they cross the DRS detection line.

If they're within a second of a leading car then an LED will come on on their steering wheel (or summat) to tell them DRS is armed.

Softs again, as they need to wait untill near the end before switching to the harder compound

Ok was just wondering because Lewis was going so much better thought they might have strangely gone with the harder compound.
