What's the point of having a "Save Me" song ......
............ if the judges base their decisions not on the song but on the alleged "personality" of the singer?
Why bother having them sing at all? Tonight's songs were a waste of time and effort. Treyc put her heart and soul into her song but it counted for nothing - so why put her through it? Tonight was a total travesty. |

If it suits them, they do base it on the singing.
They judge it on whatever gives them the outcome they want. |

I am a big Katie fan and I agree. What I don't get is that Simon voted on who he thought the public most wanted to see - surely that wouldn't be Katie as this was her third time in the bottom 2/3???

I presume he knows what the precise voting figures are? |

I said in another thread that it is a joke, scrap it or judge on final performance it's just extra torture for contestants when clearly in this case Simon and Louis had already made up their mind. So why have a sing off? Why not just a vote off??

It's all designed to pad out the 1 hour Sunday show. ITV have nothing better to put on, and it's more money for Cowell. I preferred it when it was all done & dusted on Saturday evening.

When you put it like that, it would be better all round if after boot camp we got the final 12 and the judges spent an hour's show telling us who was on tour and who won.

Katie is good tabloid fodder - a la Katie Price and Kerry Katona (i.e. not in a good way).
If Treyc had not focused all her energy on singing she might have been saved! |

It is daft isn't it. A save me song and then the judges choose.
One singer forgets her words, swears before the watershed, gives up and sits down. The other singer didn't sing well but did get through her song. Then the judges choose, except one who refuses to vote, and the better singer in the sing-off gets booted off. Oh well. I loved both and I am not sorry that Katie is still in the competition because I like her singing style. |

The sing off seems like it would be a really good opportunity to impress the public. Do the acts really get to pick their own song in the sing off? Because hardly any of them seem to pick a decent one. Ruth Lorenzo was the only person who really made the most of the sing offs.

After last night, there is no point, Katie fell apart as usual, forgetting the words as usual and stopping singing then had the cheek to swear too, yet still gets saved by Simon and his crew.
Vote Wagner I say! |

Tonight was a total travesty. Believe it or not, preferring Treyc isn't a default position. I think she's a better technical singer, but I prefer neither the tone of her voice or her performance style. The day people wake up and realise the amount of subjective judgement involved in liking someone's singing will be the day that a lot of pointless outrage is saved. Might as well start arguing about whether people should prefer coffee or tea. |

If Cheryl had gone last and purprosefully taken it to deadlock, she would have been cheating the system. |

Well I didn't like either of them. But Simon said Trey C was the better singer.
This is a singing competion and he still sent her home. As has been said Katie messed up big time yet was saved, because she is what the public want even though she has been in the bottom 3 times now. Last night was a complete shambles, they knew Cheryl would take it to deadlock that's why she was asked second instead of last which is the norm when a judge has 2 acts in the bottom. Cleary Katie had the lowest votes, but she couldn't be voted off before wildcard Trey C as that would make Cheryl look bad. |

The show is not about being the best technical singer, simply measuring who hits the best notes. It's about performance and personality and style . . . or 'the X factor'. Singing itself isn't even just about technical ability, it's also about tone and style and power . . . it's about all kinds of subjective things. Saying 'it's a singing competition' is far too simplistic. |

But Simon said he thought TreyC was the better singer yet still put Katie through on the bizarre pretext that the public would prefer to see her next week.
It's this hypocrisy that riles people with regards to the 'sing' off.... It's like people can't see past the name 'the sing off' (see post above). |

You quoted my post and yet skipped over 'performance style', which Simon clearly said he preferred from Katie. Again: simply being the best technical singer does not make someone a necessarily preferable act, so there's no hypocrisy involved at all.
It's like people can't see past the name 'the sing off' (see post above). Singing for survival, not performing for survival. The hypocrisy also shows itself in Simons comment about the public prefering to see Katie when he sent home Rachel last year after she had been in the bottom 2 a couple of times because he said that the public obviously didn't like her. Plus last night Katie forget her words, again, something that contestants in past series have been heavily criticised for.... |

"Next SINGING for their survival is"......
Singing for survival, not performing for survival. Seriously, when you're going on semantics because it doesn't reflect the nature of things with 100% accuracy you're really grasping at straws. Quote:

The judges are hypocritical sometimes . . . people are. They change their minds and reasons, their views evolve or sometimes just conflict.Treyc had been in the bottom 2 before too - neither of them were going to win, so it's not really a big difference. They're also-rans. |
