I agree that multiple titles are necessary based on attitudes within the sport. Three and only three sounds right to me and you're spot on there. However there is some hilariously silly periods of events with there being so many titles. Here's one quoted from another forum I frequent:
"...according to Boxrec, when PBF fought Cotto in May 2012 it was for the WBA "Super" World light middleweight title, which Cotto was the holder of, for reasons I can't figure out. That's because when he fought Yuri Foreman in June 2010 it was for the "regular" light middleweight title, but then when he fought Mayorga in March 2011 it had suddenly become the "Super" title. The only justification I can see for it is that because something called the "World Boxing Board light middleweight title" was also on the line in that fight (I AM NOT KIDDING), but that title has not been contested for since then.
Meanwhile, Rigoberto Alvarez was able to win the "regular" title by beating Nobuhiro Ishida in October 2010. He then lost it to Austin Trout in February 2011, a month before Cotto fought Mayorga. Trout had the title all the way through to December 2012, when he beat Cotto in Cotto's next fight after losing to PBF. Then, when Trout fought Canelo Alvarez in April he was automatically raised to the status of "Super" champion because it was a unification bout with Alvarez being WBC champion. Because Trout was made "Super" champion, Erislandy Lara and Alfredo Angulo fought for the "vacant" "regular" champion title in June.
After all that, PBF will now fight Alvarez for the "Super" title, having already beaten Cotto for it sixteen months ago. Of course, after that PBF returned to welterweight and beat Guerrero. And if he beats Alvarez he could very well go back to welterweight and the "Super" light middleweight title will be vacant once again.
So, in conclusion:
* Cotto was regular champion and became super champion
* Rigoberto Alvarez became regular champion
* Trout beat Rigoberto Alvarez to become regular champion
* Mayweather beat Cotto to become super champion
* Trout beat Cotto to retain the regular championship
* Trout became super champion before fighting Canelo Alvarez
* Canelo Alvarez beat Trout to become super champion
* Lara became regular champion
* Canelo Alvarez and Mayweather are fighting for the super championship next weekend
It still makes no sense why Cotto was made super champion, though, because there was no other recognised championship on the line when he fought Mayorga. "
And another:
"LOL, this is a great one. On THE SAME NIGHT that Broner is scheduled to defend the WBA world welterweight title, Keith Thurman will be defending the WBA interim welterweight title. December 14 at the MGM Grand, I kid you not."
"Also, in every division except cruiserweight, light-heavyweight, junior-lightweight and strawweight, the WBA has at least two champions, and in four of them there are THREE WBA CHAMPIONS."
To sum up, the WBA titles are garbage nowadays. I should just be happy as long as they deliver the big fights but when something's nonsense it grates on me
