Weird Sound issue
I am having some strange sound issues with the center channel on the HD channels. I am using a 5.1 amp and HDMI cables to connect.
Basically on BBC HD .. (the Sarah Jane Adventures) .. I could not hear any speech, but it was fine on BBC 1 HD. Most of the time I can hear speech fine on all the sound channels, so I am puzzled why it failed for that particular programme. Anyone else have these problems or know the cause. Is there a fix? This was on the HDR Foxsat box. Thanks. |

If you are using an amp with the Foxsat-HDR there is nothing that the Foxsat does to the broadcast audio other than pass it on to the amp. The problem either exists in the broadcast or in the amp configuration. It sounds like the centre channel is missing if you are getting no speech, speech is generally encoded only on the centre channel for most programming (except during particular scenes).

I have been reading that AAC encoding is the issue, but I may be wrong.

That only applies to freeview-HD and the BBC HD channels, satellite is Dolby Digital 2.0 or 5.1 More likely is the beeb occasionly flag DD2.0 as 5.1 so the amp tries to output 5.1. result no centre channel

I see, thanks for the explanation, seems rather odd of the Beeb to do that.

I think you are correct, The Sarah Jane Adventures played fine the other day, so it must be the flagging issue you mentioned.
