Recording in HD in Non-Freesat mode

I may be wrong here but I seem to recall a poster saying that he recorded HD channels in non-Freesat mode so as to be able to archive them. I've tried that a couple of times now with BBC HD but, as with a recording made in Freesat mode, the non-Freesat mode recording still has 'ENC' beside it in the media list.

I'm assuming ENC stands for 'encrypted'?

Are non-Freesat mode HD channels encrypted? Were they ever unencrypted?

When in non-freesat mode reboot the machine. HD recordings are then not encrypted.

Thanks for that. Handy to know.
