Kids In America on X-Factor
soundstory

God almighty how awful was that collection of Bieber-likes' cover of Kim Wilde's Kids In America?.

I have never heard anything so pointless, talentless & tuneless for a while.

"One Direction" alright & I know what direction is going to be in !!

(& I can't wait for the backlash, bring it on!!)

It is a good song, love Kim wilde especially her version of "you just keep me hangin on".

It was a cheese fest and I was cringing. They're only in the show because teeny bopper girls and middle-aged men in denial are voting for them.

Furthermore, the song is by Kim Wilde who is British. To me, the song sounds like a protest about Americanisation or music only being seen as worth if if it breaks the USA.

Yes it always had a cynical air to it, but I do recall at the time, her brother mentioning that it was also a very obvious attempt to break her into the US market, so a bit of both

I love the original song, has to be one of my favourite 80's pop songs and if you still listen to it now, it doesn't sound dated. Although, for a long time I did think this was sung by an American, until I realised that Kim was from Chiswick. For a long time, I thought the same about Paul Young too!

Do you not think she was trying too hard to be like Blondie (Debby Harry) though?

Well as a 12 year old boy, I wasn't complaining

A shame someone didn't do a decent cover of it on X Factor. Would have liked to have seen Kim back in the Top 40. Been 17 years.

The song and video, and her look, all appear very Debby Harry... however, I wasn't around at the time so I imagine lots of people looked like that... kind of how now we have this influx of skinny tie wearing indie bands with scruffy hair...
