I was watching "Come Dine with Me" yesterday and the dessert was a trifle. I couldn't believe so many comments were made about it being such a 1970s dessert though admittedly with pâté as a starter too, the menu was a bit retro!

Surely everybody must eat a bit of a "retro" dessert at some point in a year?

A well-made trifle is one of the few desserts I find hard to turn down. I can say no to just about anything but home-made trifle, apple crumble or rice pudding are in a category of their own.

Does the Tesco finest sherry trifle contain a reasonable amount of fruit?

Delia has a recipe for a cheats chocolate trifle and it's delicious.

Basically, it's double chocolate chip muffins sliced in quarters in the bottom of the bowl. Then morello cherries (jar) drained and soaked in rum sprinkled on top. Then a chocolate custard is made with mascapone cheese, then topped with cream. Not a dessert for anyone on a diet, but it rings the changes and is lovely at Christmas time.

I rather like Tesco Finest Sherry Trifle. Normally I wouldn't touch their trifles as they contain battery eggs but this one contains free-range eggs.

Only thing wrong with it is the price; £1.18 is a bit steep.

More to the point, as it's sold as 'Sherry' Trifle does it contain a reasonable amount of sherry or is it 'Sherry flavoured' ?

Is that for a small one? I look for when there's one reduced and get it.

Yes; £1.18 for a small/individual one.
