Do HTC do 3g phones ()Desire

I have just swapped my Nexus one for a desire z on Monday and I haven’t seen the 3g symbol show up yet. For the last 6 months I have been with 02 on there 30 day rolling contract (simplicity) and with my nexus it would only drop the 3g signal when I went to work. I have spoken to a couple of my friends who have the older desire and they both say the very rarely get the 3g symbol.

What symbols are you seeing?

I get a 'G' or an 'H'. I have rarely got an 'E' or '3G'. Clearly, this is dependent on your provider.

As I understand it, in order of better connection speed it goes G -> 3G -> E -> H

I have seen G, E & H on my desire but haven't noticed 3G

Not quite, its G -> E -> 3G -> H.

E (edge) is like an enhanced 2G network connection. And I've rarely seen it at all.

To the OP - is the phone set to "2G network" only?

@ SonyJunkie - Nope. In order of Speed (lowest to highest

G is GPRS - Slowest
E means EDGE - Kind of like 2.5G
3G
H means HSDPA - Fastest

Some phones won't show H they'll simply show 3G whether it's regular 3G or HSPDA.

On another note, my Desire doesn't like loading pages when 3g is shown. It loads fine on G or H though. Weird.

On my HTC Wildfire I only ever get 'H' connections when I'm away from my home wireless.

Just checked and it is set to GSM/WCDMA auto

that's what's supposed to happen - you don't need hsdpa/3g when you're connected to wifi

EDIT
in fact I don't think you'll see g or e either because you don't need the cellular network for data at all!

I don't understand. I said when I'm away from my home wireless. What I mean is that I leave both 'mobile network' and 'wireless network' enabled. The wireless is the default so that is used whenever possible, but when I go outside of that range the 'mobile network' kicks in, always using 'H'.

I usually get H and 3G on my Desire, sometimes E, but I know in that area is no 3G yet. I use 'GSM/WCDMA auto'.

Mine skips between H & G when I'm out and about. The only times I ever get Edge connections are when I'm abroad.

Desire HD on TMobile - shows H 99% of the time. I've had 3G a few times, but I don't miss it because H is nice and quick
