We all know the day of unlimited data have now gone. But do you have enough data with 500mb/1GB ? Have the likes of O2 and Orange got it right ? Would you prefer the T-Mobile /Vodafone option ? T-Mobile 1GB,3GB or 10GB or Vodafone 1GB ,3GB,5GB. Ok 10GB is a bit extreme but in the days of smartphone would you be willing to pay extra for data ?

I have just been thinking about this looking at getting a smartphone and dataplan and would be really interested if anyone who uses their browser/apps a lot struggles with data bundles.

I dont understand how they can call something so blatantly limited "unlimited". A 500mb FUP would be gone very quickly, especially for someone without wifi at home/work to get big downloads. For me looking at networks, it's probably the deciding factor because the last thing i want is a smartphone which i cant use because of a cap.

What do the different networks do if you go over the limit... stop you, charge you extra?

I wouldnt have done in the past, but now i would with my iPhone etc and i think many others would aswell.

I have an iPhone 3GS on Orange and they give me 250MB a month as im PAYG, and when im working etc i can use that up quite fast and i have done in the past, then once i go over that allowance, they then take it out of my credit without me knowing its ran out.

I'm getting an iPhone 4 at Xmas but this time probably on T-Mobile as they will give me 500mb internet a month which would be plenty for me, but even if you go over the 500mb on T-Mobile, they wont take it from your credit or charge you, just monitor your usage and restrict you if blatantly abusing the service.

So IMO, Yes data bundles and size is important to me.

No I only have 750 mb a month which is not nearly enough considering I used to have unlimited data. I'd happily pay £5 for an extra GB or £10 for Something like an extra 3 or 4 GB.

I was only getting 500MB and found it was not enough i regurlarly reached over 1GB.I joined GiffGaff who give unlimited data no FUP.A £10 goodybag gives you 150 mins unlimited text and unlimited data for a month.Just topup with another goodybag at the end of the month.

Lol no came off contract ages ago, and I don't understand anyone who is still on contract, not when you can pick up phones cheap anytime without having to wait for upgrades. 24month contracts are taking the youknowwhat.

What happens when you got a problem? The usual stuff that can happen, no texts getting thru, can't get a signal, network down etc. You can't exactly walk into your local store can you? I'm not saying they can fix much instore anyway but at least you got some support there. Am I right in saying with GG its just an online forum and you all help each other out?

It is all online .TBH ive never had a problem with any network usually find out stuff online anyway and prefer an online forum to some indian call centre where you cant even understand each other

I don't accept caps, never have, never will.

I used to be with AOL Broadband at home because they were truly unlimited, then I switched to Sky Broadband, who are now the only truly unlimited broadband company.

I used to be with o2 Simplicity who offered truly unlimited mobile Internet, now I'm with giffgaff.

I moved from O2 because of the caps.....The networks are pushing smart phones then pulling the rug to rip you off......If I have no choice in the matter I'll ditch the smart phone rather than pay extra to use it.

I'd rather be with a network that works, has acceptable data speeds, and where the chance of getting a 3G signal is not impossible.

O2 and GiffGaff don't do any of this.

I'd also be with a network that can offer sustainable policies, rather than offering unlimited data until the parent company (O2) decides to tell the "independent management" of GiffGaff to cut it out.

Oh, and I'd rather be with a network who has this thing called "customer services".

Well Tmobile and Orange are rubbish around here. The best 3G is provided by O2. In two years with O2 I didn't need CS. You only have to read these boards to see that none of the networks have perfect CS. This would depend on each individuals experience of course.
Your supposition that gg is not sustainable may or may not be right. Only time will answer that one. In the meantime I will take the savings made and keep it in my pocket rather than theirs.
You are free to pay whatever you want for whatever restricted service you want.

They have been on the go a year now and if they do go bust then its on elsewhere.Cant see it happening tho they are owned by O2.

They may not go bust, but there's nothing stopping O2 from making the "unlimited" a little more limited.

As for indian CS, not likely. I've only had to call my network a handful of times, and every time it was British CS. Either way, Indian or British, I'd rather have that than being totally reliant on "community support".

Price is not the be all and end all for me - I want a network that works.

I dont mean they will go bust. But it won't be long until the 'Unlimited' has the 'Un' removed.

It's not profitable, and O2 just can't put the strain on it's crippled network anymore.

I don't know what people do to get up to 500MB anyway.

I absolutely hammer push email on my phone, I use it instead of texting most of the time. I go on Twitter a lot, and browse mobile websites for news, weather and traffic info. I use Google Maps and Nokia Maps all the time for sat-nav and finding stuff.

With that, I use about 50MB in a whole month, and I don't think I could use my phone more without actually making an effort to use data unnecessarily. What are people who hit 500MB caps actually doing?

The most likely cause of going over the fair use limit is streaming audio or video. Applications like Spotify, Last FM and YouTube consume a lot of data as does constantly updating applications.

The most workable method to avoid issues with data limits is to use Wi-Fi wherever possible!
