- Loads of 3rd party software which isn't on the App Store.

- Customisation.

Free Apps is no way the sole reason to Jailbreak and is pretty much frowned upon by most of the jailbreaking community. It allows you to install third party applications not included by Apple in the App Store - some of these applications have greater control and more functions due to not being limited by the API's available in the App Store.

I currently jailbreak my phone for the following:
Changing camera from 640x480 30fps to 1080x800 25fps
SBSettings
BiteSMS
LockInfo
Custom SMS tone

And thats about it really.

Sure, when editing videos for DVD that have been recorded on an iPhone, because it records at 30fps Premiere Pro does some very wierd things and takes an age to re-render clips into the correct frame-rate) 25fps for the UK.

SBSettings
Allows access to quick toggles of 3G, Bluetooth, Wifi, and numerous other things, accessible from the status bar.

BiteSMS
Replacement/Addon messaging application. Allows for replying and composing SMS messages from within any app (overlays on top of other apps).

Lockinfo
Displays upcoming calendar entries, notifications of SMS/MMS/Email messages and phone notifications on the lockscreen.

Totally correct on the SMS tone front

It's worth it for SBSettings alone IMO!

I also use IntelliScreen.

Does a jailbroken phone get 'straightened up' when the phone is next connected to iTunes?

The main reason I jailbreak is to run MyWi 4.0 - It allows me to share my iPhone's 3G connection with my iPad on the fairly rare occasions that I'm not in range of WiFi. Saves me having a more expensive 3g version of the iPad and a separate data bill to pay. I would be very wasteful as in my case I very rarely need 3G access for the iPad.

It means there are Cydia (or other stuff you got from Cydia) updates available. Click 'Changes' at the bottom and 'Install' at the top right.

You won't be able to get updates for hacked apps through iTunes - just download newer versions from wherever you originally got the Apps from. As said above this is frowned upon as most Jailbreakers are doing it to get around artificial restrictions Apple have put in place and to be able to access Apps not available on iTunes. I don't know many that use it run pirated apps.

No thankfully it doesn't. You can just continue to use iTunes as normal. However you will lose the Jailbreak if you use iTunes to 'Update' or 'Restore' your device.

Can anyone explain in reasonable detail how to jailbreak iOS 4.1 please if they have done it? A pm would be good in case it's against the rules to post it on here. I am interested in jailbreaking but it doesn't seem to make much sense off some of the sites I read like the limra1n one

http://www.greenpois0n.com/

2) Run it & follow the instructions.

Thanks Matt. I assume that this will work on the iPhone 4? I'll give it a go when I get home if it does

Thanks Matt. I'll let you know how I get on and if I have any problems.

Can you think of any potential issues?

Well, just be aware that you're doing it at your own risk

The first time I used Greenpois0n, it failed (maybe I got the timing wrong for DFU mode, not sure), & left it in a "This iPhone must be restored" state.

I restored via iTunes, then tried to Jailbreak it again with Greenpois0n, and it worked perfectly.

Done

It failed first time after clicking the "jailbreak" option. I hit retry after that and it worked the second time.

Thanks for that link mate

I have been tempted to jailbreak so that I can share my data connection to my iPad/ my friends iPod touch, but have been worried about doing, what would happen to the apps I already have from the app store, can I still buy new apps (both free & paid) from the app store.

No probs

Nothing will happen to the Apps you already have, & you can continue to use iTunes & the official App Store as normal (but be aware that Restoring/Updating the iPhone in iTunes will wipe the JB).
