Probably the same as it is on the ZTE Blade; similar CPU/GPU specs - fine on the simpler levels, but when you get a lot more wood/blocks/birds/pigs/feathers flying around it slows down to a crawl

Mate has an HTC Hero its the same on his in fact it slowed his whole phone down. You can speed it up a bit if you go into airplane mode first as it disables the adverts.

It doesn't work on my Wildfire. It took ages to load up, and when it does, the screen is black apart from a 1cm strip along one side which is attempting to show part of the title screen. It's completely unplayable.

Is there some setting I need to change to make it display properly?

No my phone's fine, I just didn't realise how long you need to leave it for.

After letting it go to standby and waking it up again a few minutes later, the title screen had loaded and it was all ok.

Should do, the CPU on the desire is over twice as fast. I get the feeling that Angry Birds for Android was tested on the higher spec devices, and they did minimal testing on the lower end kit.

It's not actually that it takes ages to load up, more that there seems to be a bug in the way it displays the title screen, and unless you lock and unlock the screen, it won't display properly.

Pressing the power button manually to put the phone to standby and then waking it up again even 2 seconds after the grey screen appears will make it work properly!

Earlier levels were fine on the blade; its when you get to the levels with considerably more to destroy that it'll probably slow down.

Sounds strange in that the GPU is very close in speed, especially with the low resolution of the Wildfire.
That same GPU is also in the X10 and LG GT540 methinks.

Its also why these phones might support Flash when running 2.2
