I have just purchased, but not yet received a Blackberry 9700 on O2 with 500MB Blackberry data bolt on.

I want to use it for email and limited web surfing. I fully understand this data allowance when I am using the phone out-and-about over the phone network.

However when I am at home I will connect the phone to my BT broadband home hub via WiFi. Will I incur data charges against my allowance? This seems like a very simple question to me but I have spent about 30 mins on Google and am finding very mixed answers. I read on one site that the YouTube app only works over wifi but it warned not to use it unless you have an unlimited data plan. Surely this cannot be correct?

I would appreciate if someone could explain this BIS to me as I have never had a Blackberry before.

If you connect via wi-fi it uses the wifi broadband supply bandwidth not the blackberry bolt on allowance

Thankyou for that. It is what I thought it should be.

But what is this BIS stuff? Why is it different to a normal data tarrif? I am hoping to have my emails pushed to my phone. Does this use data from my allowance even over wifi?

With the exception of tech like vodafone sure signal, no mobile network should be charging for use when you are using wifi.

With regards to BIS (blackberry internet service), this is a connection back to a blackberry server at o2. This gives you the push email and some internet access (some apps use the o2 "carrier" internet, some use the BIS).

BIS will work over the mobile network - GPRS, EDGE and 3G, and will also work over any wifi connection.

BIS has an advantage over the standard "carrier" internet because the internet traffic is compressed (by about 5x) - therefore you see quicker downloads and less usage compared to other phones.

I think it's also encrypted (the enterprise version is, and I think BIS is too).
