Apologies if this has been answered before but I'm curious about what happens for the other n days per week when the contestants aren't being filmed for a task. I had assumed that they stayed full time in the house but is that correct? If it is then what do they do for the rest of the time?

So they do maybe 2 or 3 tasks per week and the Beeb just chunks them up into weekly shows to be broadcast? That must be pretty intense.
Well it's certainly not what you could call RTV, despite the illusion that they all live in that house 24/7.
We have one weekly episode edited to look like they all live in that house for the duration of the programme.
And if we've to go by the programme itself, the whole of the tasks take at most about 3 days.

Without a camera pinned on them and where we the viewers are able to monitor them online or otherwise, we're at the mercy of editing...............and god knows where they go or what they get up to in the intervening time.
For this type of show, perhaps it doesn't even matter, but to give the illusion that they all live in that house for the duration is false and misleading.

Yes they do two per week. Most tasks take two days, then one day for the boardroom with the treat happening the same day (often the evening). So during the week they run at most with 4 hours sleep per night as a lot of task work is done late at night. I believe they have Sundays free, but are still kept in the house with only one phone call allowed out per week. So by the end the finalists have been like that for 7 weeks. All in that house.
It is very intense. A few 'crack' like Janine in S3 after several weeks of this. Others, Micheal S4 and (I think) Ben S5 just ran out of energy.

They do live in the house for the duration. The tasks are filmed back to back.

So where do they live if not during the duration ? - are you saying they go home, then come back for the next task(s) ?
I would much prefer a two hour prog say, even if only online to show more of the boardroom etc....I often get the impression that significant stuff has been left out of the story..
So, that means that two are fired each week? For example, Dan and Joy were fired within the same week?
It has been said by ex-apprentices that the tasks are back-to-back. I feel the producers and Lordalun do the candidates a disservice by maintaining the pretense that it is a "12 week interview from hell" as the true nature of the process is even harder than it appears. In each series you can see the exhaustion making itself felt.
I suspect that Junior Apprentice wasn't quite at the normal pace, but even then the filming was over a much shorter period than implied on the program.

I agree. Would add that they do the viewers a disservice too, by thinking we're thick.
Not so sure the JA version wasn't at the normal pace though. At the age of 16 you can legally work adult hours. It was very noticable how tired some got as it wore on.

Because previous candidates have said so.
Also the filming of series being shown now was caught by members of the public on mobile phones. Uploaded to twitpix etc dates each task, only days apart.
And you can see the strain on them as it progresses.

Another clue that the process doesn't take three months is that the season clearly doesn't go from early Autumn to mid Winter as it would.
Was talking about this at work today and 2 people told me that the boardroom is actually a studio set and Sir Alans 'secretary' is a member of the production team. Anyone know if this is true?

The boardroom is a studio set. It's filmed at Dukes Island Studios.

Which is why all the door-to-taxi scenes of everyone having just been "fired" have to be filmed at the start of the series.

When they sit in the boardroom studio set, there is a gallery above them that facilitates moving cameras that is why you don't see any cameras in the shots. It really is so artificial having camera operators and studio lights above you.

Must be really off putting too. You're supposed to have a killer answer and there's this great machine moving just above where you are supposed to be looking. That and the retakes when Sugar fluffs something, or they want a reaction from another angle.
I reckon Lord Alan of the sith pimps all the ladies out.
