Pointless foods
There was a segment on a show ages ago where they had a mock trial for pointless foods.
One of the accused was cous cous ![]() Today though I nominate jarred white asparagus. I bought a jar the other day as I though it may be nice in a salad. It's just tasteless mush. It was difficult to even get it out of the jar without it mushing up. What are your nominees? |

My parents used to buy asparagus in tins and jars when we were in holiday in various European countries. I used to hate it as it was always so mushy and it put me off fresh asparagus too.
Thankfully I have started liking fresh again, but will not touch tins or jars of the stuff again. Tins of pink salmon are another pointless item to me. Taste of nothing and nowhere near as nice as fresh salmon. |

I'm not sure of the taste but the smell of tinned salmon is disgusting.

Butter substitutes are pretty foul.

I though Lurpak was butter
I can taste the difference between it and real butter. Quote:

Tinned salmon is evil and I also don't think much of butter substitutes. However, I do like spinach and occasionally buy a spinach and rocket mix to use in salads, which is a very nice mix. I've never enjoyed cous cous despite trying to give it the benefit of the doubt a few times. The name is lame/stupid, I find it too dry and in some cases very bland. One of my nominees for pointless foods is unfortunately dragon fruit (pitaya). It is one of the most pretty fruits you will ever see but sadly the edible part (the flesh), which is either white or red-purple depending on the variety of fruit, has such a subtle taste that some would probably not even notice it. Whenever I have bought one, I have always had a white flesh variety. For those who have not eaten dragon fruit, the flesh looks very similar to that of a kiwi fruit as it has little black seeds. I would say there is a subtle sweet taste at best. Apparently there is a sour pitaya but I have yet to try one. I still buy dragon fruit occasionally though.

Tuna. Wherever it turns up it tastes crap, especially with Sweetcorn.

Lambs Lettuce, tastless and and a soft unpleasant texture, why do they have to ruin mixed bags of salad with it?

CORIANDER! Trigpoint's comment reminded me - coriander in bags of mixed salad. It's always added as a stealth ingredient too - they say "mixed leaves and herbs" on the front, and say something like 'lamb's lettuce, rocket and spinach, with herbs' when what they should say is WARNING THIS CONTAINS CORIANDER. It ruins the whole bag.
