sukisoo
13-11-2010
hi i have my line rental with bt but my calls and b/band is with Vrgin National (we are in a non-cabled area). And i am registered with the TPS and do not get any marketing calls

I keep reciving silent calls and when I try 1471 i get s message stating i was called but the caller witheld their number
I think I know who is calling me ( a private caller). Is there
anything I can do tho 'block' or bar these numbers from calling me as it is really annoying
Thanks

Anonymous caller reject.
Anyone calling must reveal their number or they don't get through.
There may be a monthly fee for the service. Call up and ask.

In your case sukisoo, you need to call BT to get ACR because your incoming calls arrive on BT.

£4 per month.

However, that will not prevent nuisance calls from abroad (many using random diallers) because, although BT doesn't/won't present the CLI of overseas calls, most do not withhold their numbers (i.e. they're just 'unavalable' rather than withheld).

Any call I receive where the CLI shows as "unavailable" or "withheld" I don't answer, it is as simple as that.

It is possible to reject anything that doesn't have a number, which is why a lot of these cold callers have a CLI of 000000000 or similar as this gets around caller reject.

Why don't BT/phone providers just allow anyone who wants this service, to have it free? There would be no need for nuisance calls advisors/tracing etc then.

I'm amazed that this day in age there isn't a phone system that only allows incoming calls from numbers that are actually stored on your phone.

It's a fact, todays landline phones are still pretty dumb and inflexible.

The Truecall unit does what you require and more, but you have to pay best part of £100 for it.

edit: I see it's a bit cheaper via Amazon

Even that's no good if you have savvy friends who use services such as Call1899, since it whether or not you get CLI depends on the routing they choose so you would very likely miss calls from people from whom you wanted to hear.

The OP was having problems with silent calls.

I've set up my Truecall so that a caller whose number is not recognised has to give their name. If they speak, my phone rings and this information is passed on to me. I can then decide whether to accept the call or not.
Silence results in the call being rejected automatically without my phone ringing. Unfortunately the rejection of silent calls doesn't work properly 100% of the time, ie it can fail if the incoming line is very noisy.

That's not the point.

If you reject calls with no Id and you have savvy friends who use the 'network hopping' services they may or may not present an Id when calling and you may thus reject calls from people with whom you wanted to speak.

That sounds like a workable scheme.

Can you not change the threshold for what is considered speaking?

That would certainly be a useful option; unfortunately if it does exist I haven't found it in the menus yet.

Sorry about the late response.

Many thanks for that info Jackthom, looks like it is exactly what I need.

The only calls I want to get are from those stored on my phone and no others.

Again thanks for the link, I shall investigate further.

Cheers.
