An awful lot of faffing about?

I actually quite enjoyed the dance. What really annoyed me was again the inconsistency of Len! Why didn't he go off on one about faffing around like he normally does? It seems unfair on the other contestants.

There's no doubt about it - the faffing is put in by the professionals to hide their celeb's failings. The worst offender is definitely Vincent, because Face-lift-ity is so poor. If the judges got tough on lifts then they should also nail this - once and for all.

After all, we're only asking them to dance for 90 seconds!

Those stairs have never been used as much as they have this year, the reason being the couples are not introduced onto the dance floor anymore because they have moved Tess' room.

I agree, some of the pros are making a mockery of the dances and trying to con the judges and public. That's why Kara and Artem's, and Scott and Natalie's dances were such a refreshing change with such great content .

I think it's a bit of both.

IMO, SCD has never recovered from what happened when John Sergeant was there, and the producers have aimed it towards "entertainment" more than ever this year.

Then the pros take advantage of the new laxness to put in lots of non-dance "performance" to distract from the deficiencies in their celeb partner's dancing.

The couples who can dance well put in some too, fearing to be insufficiently "entertaining".

Then the excuses are made. That faffing is ok so long as it adds to the story, for example. Sure, and if they just went out and acted, that would add even more to the story; but there'd be no dancing left.

I think that it is the latter, the producers are encouraging this (hence the lack of criticism from the judges).

It's a definite move towards showdance and comedy sketch. Quite deliberate. We've had lifts, we've had props. We've had never a word about time spent in hold.

It's designed to be less about dance and more about dance-tertainment.

What amazes me is that the judges - especially Len - seem to have done an about-turn on the subject. Not only did they not complain, they praised the acts (I prefer to think of them as acts rather than dances). So now suddenly lifts which were okay up until last night are a no-no, and faffing around with props which were a no-no until last night are not only okay but great performances. Can we not leave Hollywood to the Americans who that sort of thing best, and just stick to dancing?

What a a good post. Yes, that illustrates the huge difference between last and this year's VWs. Even if you put more ornamentation into that VW, you'd still have a lot more continuous VW than we've had on this series.
