Thanks, that explains it!

So I now join goggled in asking what problems arise from padding the recording times?

There is two ways of padding.

The first way is to edit the reservation and input your own start and stop times. This makes the recording into a manual one and stops series recording, though you can set a repeat pattern.

The second is to add auto padding.

This disables accurate recording but retains the series linkage.

Con's

It applies to all recordings.

Clashes introduced by the auto padding are not identified at scheduling time only at the time it occurs.

Remind me, please!

If I were recording C4 with auto-padding to be followed by an immediate recording of, say BBC4, would the start signal not override the padding? If I am wrong, which would be listed first in the clash dialog box; the current program just ending or the new one?

If you had 2mins padding at both ends. The C4 recording would start 2 minutes before the scheduled start time. Assuming the BBC4 recording is going to use the same tuner the bbc4 recording will try and start two min before it's scheduled start (4 mins before the recording on C4 is due to finish). (Auto padding applies to all recordings so there is no accurate recording). This would generate a clash box asking you to cancel the C4 or the BBC4 recording (it'sw a long time since I tried this but from memory C3 is first in the list). Auto padding works fine if two recordings are consecutive from trhe same channel (the padding at the end of the first and the start of the second is dropped)

If the dialogue is ignored the first recording is completed before the second starts (chopping 2 mins off the start of the second recording)

Thanks Graham

I think I'd be more likely to end pad, as it's more frustrating to miss the end than the start, The latter is more frustrating: the start frequently is blurb anyway .

For C4, E4, M4 the "time codes" appear to be transmitted exactly according to the EPG. So if a program is from 21:00 to 22:00 the recording will always be exactly between those times - it never varies even by a minute (whereas BBC and ITV recordings are "always" exact and the actual recording time is often a few minutes adrift to reflect when the program actually started and stopped).
So why are C4 unable to do as BBC and ITV?

I have had this twice with More 4 and Curb Your Enthusiasm, once I lost the first and last minute and last time, which i hadn't seen and had Larry possibly getting back with Cheryl, the last minute was chopped off. annoying.

My conclusion is its either stupidity or greed. I hope its stupidity, I would hate to think that they are doing this on purpose to make C4 your primary choice to watch rather than record forcing you to watch their adverts,

And I was amused to see that C4 have been warming us up for the new series of PeepShow for the last two weeks only to cut 30 seconds off the start of the recording, What a bunch of prize plonkers they are.

This is very lame, we watched another episode of Curb and exactly the same thing happened, first and last X seconds cut off.

I mean, as you know, im not a technical person, but this is kind of `ooh mi website's crashed` rubbish IT stuff isn't it? Doesn't someone just have to reboot a PC somewhere in the basement of Channel 4 or some 5hit?

Its just channel4 being morons trying to encourage you to watch their tv live so that you have to sit through the adverts. Someone shoud tell them that some people change channel when the adverts are on, others go to the toilet, others go to the kitchen, some people mute the intrusive sound, etc, so theryre wasting their time.

I have manually edited any Channel 4 NFL recordings now to record 5 minutes after the scheduled stop time and then add 15 minutes on at the end so if the game runs into overtime it should catch it all.

All other recordings are now set to have longer added to the end incase of over-runs. I recorded a film off BBC ONE and it cut off the last 10 minutes because the previous programme over-ran and the BBC did not update the guide information in time.

I had a thought on another potential reason for repeatedly missing the start off peepshow (and others). They could be doing it to make it more difficult for the five people out there who might be recording it to upload it to file sharing sites. If thats their reason nice to that millions have to suffer.

I think it is much more likely to be due to incompetence. The people responsible are probably unpaid media studies graduates on work experience, managed by those who think talking over the credits is a good idea
