I have just switched from ITV1 to ITV1 HD to watch England and noticed that the audio is much lower than ITV 1, has anyone else noticed this?

The audio is a mess on ITV1 HD for the footy. Not for the first time.

I experience this all the time. The difference appears to be in the decoded signal levels between Dolby Stereo and Dolby 5.1 sound. I believe that it is about 7dB difference. I am constantly changing volume levels between HD and SD broadcasts. It is particularly annoying when you go from HD to SD as the volume suddenly blares out at you. This is especially true when I have been watching a film, where the average volume level is lower (to accommodate the wider dynamic range on film sound tracks for the cinema) and I have turned up the volume to make sure that we hear the central "dialogue" speaker. Change back to any SD programme after this and the volume level increase is even more marked.

I also hate the difference in volume levels from the continuity announcements between programmes. These are considerably louder than most programmes themselves. Very annoying.

I am working on this at the moment, my Denon AV amp has personal memory + which in theory can store the settings for volume and channel level between PCM, DD 2 and DD 5.1 even from the same source. So far I have Matrix surround sound set for PCM and this uses the default channel levels but DD 2 and DD 5.1 have levels set 5db higher, it seems to work quite well but needs a bit of tweaking.

My issue is between the volume of SD channels and HD channels when viewing through the hdmi lead, I have to turn the volume way up on the HD channels but when I switch to a SD channel the volume is far too loud. Is this a standard thing with hdmi or an issue with my Humax box? Is there anything that can be done to rectify this?
This doesn't happen when viewing through the scart.

Couldn't agree more - it's a real pain in the a**e (or should that be 'ear'). Last night I had been watching a BBC HD recording up until the 10pm News. I switched quickly to Ch. 101 and was blasted out of my chair by the opening drum rolls! My wife nearly had kittens.

It looks like there is no difference in the volume level jumps, either if you use an amplifier connected by optical lead (my set-up), or the audio within HDMI lead. The jumps are there for everyone.

It is obviously down to the broadcasters and possibly inherent differences in decoding. The volume jump is not just when switching between SD and HD, but also if you stay with HD. I even find the link video clips (the ones with the BBC HD logo and a moving barrel lens) really annoying, since these are considerably louder (especially that low frequency sound that accompanies it) than the programme you have just watched. And if you switch to that channel during the links, you then set the volume too low to hear the following programme. Come on BBC....

Is the BBC trying to impress anyone listening that it is in 5.1 channel sound? I am fed up with it the showy HD linking clips that can make you jump out of your seat! Most people listening on TV built-in speakers will be oblivious to it, so why do they do it? Even shop displays are so awful that you would not be able to hear it properly anyway. So surely it will not help "sell" HD and Dolby high fidelity sound to the general public!

You don't get HD through the scart, only SD.
