The iPod bit is pretty good, but the supplied headphones are a bit crappy. Invest in some decent replacements and the sound quality is excellent.

I think the iPhone is one of Apple's better sounding devices. It has a lot more drive than the iPod nano and classic (not sure about touch), and sounds pretty good with decent headphones without the need for an amp. (I use mine with some Sennheiser HD25s)

Never used a Sansa clip but I know they're widely regarded to be one of the best sounding MP3 players.

I use the iPhone to stream to some fantastic bluetooth headphones on 7dayshop (£16) and my sony bt-mex 2500car stereo c£100 It is good. the genius mix is a fantastic tool.
load 1000-2000 tracks on your iPhone, choose a track that matches your mood for the trip and it picks tracks that match that track from your vast library.

Wiki does not tel us how many khz the sansa player is to compare with the iPhone.

The kHz/stats of the output really don't have that much bearing on the reality of sound quality though.

When I had a few different players at the same time - Sansa Clip, iPod Shuffle, 5th Gen Video iPod, 2nd gen iPod Touch .... the Sansa Clip definitely had way more drive and overall sound quality than any of the others.

Hmmmm, unless Apple have done something radical between the 5th Gen iPod and the iPhone, I would never describe the iPhone (or any iPod for matter) as having excellent sound quality. Although at the end of the day all that ultimately matters is if you like the sound you're hearing.

I made the mistake of connecting my iPod up to my hifi a few years back and listening via my headphones - Stax Lambda Pros (look up reviews of the Sennheiser Orpheus - these Stax's are way better). Basically the iPod sounded competent, but definitely not good.

The iPhone sound quality is a lot better than the iPod classic - I believe that's the general consensus at Head-Fi.
