They were convinced that watching BBC 1 on Freeview channel 1 was in HD. Of course, when they saw the stunning pictures of BBC 1 HD & ITV HD coming from my box, they had to agree that what they had in fact purchased was a set with a HD capable 1080 pixel screen that had a tuner that was SD only.”

This is nothing new, ever since HD TVs have been available people have been assuming that they'll get HD irrespective of source (although tbh technically they will). This is just the fault of uninformed customers and marketing bods who are happy not to correct this misapprehension.

Would you believe some so-called "HD Ready" TVs didn't even have a SD digital tuner. OMG!!!!!

That would make them HD-Ready monitors. Top of the range kit like pioneer plasmas had the tuners in a seperate box. You bought the display and the add ons you wanted.

Nah, only if there wasn't even an analogue tuner would it be a monitor.... there was life before digital!

I agree Lidl/Aldi/Netto are bottom end discounters, but do sell quality stuff like Comag. But Tessie Cohen sells her own brand of cheap & nasty also.

see you JO”

No, but equally when a poster comments in a certain style it can elicit a robust response from certain posters.

Not sure I'd class COMAG as high quality products - if I was after a decent satellite receiver - which is their line of work - I'd look for a Pace or Humax. I did make the point that Tesco and others do sell own brand products, but also made the point they sell known brands and customers can look at and compare the products.

I guess plenty of us would be happy with no tuner at all if you have sky hd or v+ and it brought down the price of the set.

Unfortunately it puts the price UP - and every such attempt has failed miserably

I think the very reason this thread is so long illustrates what a con "HD Ready" really is. The nuance between "HD READY" and able to receive "HD" broadcasts (Freesat +) is in essence technical and so how on earth are the general public supposed to get it? In my opinion Shame on the manufacturers and retailers and thanks to the original person who started the thread for hopefully helping thousands avoid disappointment .....the post comes up at the top on Google....power to the non techie people, championed by the nice techie few!!

Conventional Freeview SD televisions are just so incredibly OLD hat these days;if I was a tv manufacturer ALL of my sets would be Freeview HD equipped from the smallest to the biggest so NOBODY misses out at all and i'd phase non Freeview HD TV production rapidly so Freeview HD becomes the norm for everybody. And Freeview HD sets can pick up normal SD services too so there's no loss for anyone.
