Sony Readers and Changing the DRM
Hi all,
I've been lurking on the forum for along time, but never actually got round to registering before. However, I now need some help. So here I am. A couple of years ago I bought a Sony eReader (PRS-505) and synched it up with my laptop (Sony Vaio if that has a bearing). All was great and groovy and I bought some lovely books (from the WH Smith ebook site) that were authorised via the Adobe Digital Editions thingy to be associated with that particular reader/laptop combination. Jump forward to recently. The reader stopped working after I dropped it for a fifth time (quite resiliant for the first four, but I guess I just pushed my luck) and the laptop was stolen. I now have new reader (PRS-650) as it would have cost £176 to repair the old one and the new one only cost £199 - Which is crazy but somewhat off topic - and a new laptop (another Vaio becuase I like them). My problem is that the ebooks that I bought under the old pairing do not now 'work' under this new set up. I try to open them in the Adobe Library software and it tells me that the computer isn't authorised to preview the book and it won't let me transfer them to the reader. WHSmith couldn't help when I asked them for assistance - Although they were great about telling me how to buy new books and install them - and Adobe just kept bouncing me round different departments without every really telling me anything. I was hoping that somebody out there might have had a similar experience and can tell me how to de-register the old kit and register the new stuff. Thank you for any aid you might have. BR |

I do already have Calibre on my PC, but didn't know that it could manage DRM type stuff.
I'll have a look at that. Thank you. BR |

Do you have a new Adobe ID? You need to authorise your new PC with your old Adobe ID using Digital Editions and check if you can read the books on PC. If you do not have a new ID you just authorise the new reader with the same ID using Digital Editions as well. Then you can transfer and read your old DRMed books. If you have a new ID, you will have to remove DRM from the old books. I don't think you can transfer the books from one DRM to another. Use google to find out how to remove it. You will need to install Python, plus a few scripts.
So, how is the new Sony reader? I had PRS-600, then PRS-300, now I have Kindle 3. I was very happy with PRS-300, but I thought the new Kindle 3 offer was very good and I am happy with it. And DRM is trasparent for the user, connected with the Amazon account. |

Google for ineptepub and strip the hateful DRM.

But - It's not all touchy feely and I can turn pages with the few remianing buttons that are on it. The lack of all the other buttons means that I get the same screen size but with a smaller over all unit. This does of course make my existing cover too big and I had to buy a new one, but other than that can't fault it. It's good to back in the epub world. Which leads me on thank everybody for their suggestions of Ineptepub. I ran that and, using my old desktop and an old version of the Digital Reader software, I can now read my books again. Thank you all. |
