Rather sensationalist I had a collapsed thyroid too, I was just put on thyroxine which will be what he's on too. Yes, the worst case scenario is you could go into a coma but you feel so crap the chances are you'd see a doctor long before that could happen. And yes you have to take it forever but it's only one little pill with breakfast. It's likely that his wife was just telling journalists factually about any health issues he has and they've blown it out of proportion - for a change

in all fairness i and many other people have been accidently diagnosed with thyroid issues, so i suppose it can get as bad as that before finding out
in my case i was ill with something else and my gp decided to test me for it

...I have been taking Thyroxine every day since I was 11!

Not exactly the world's worst illness, if only everyone could pop two pills and feel right as rain.

I had my thyroid removed about ten years ago & have been on thyroxine ever since. It's no biggie.
