Is there another presenter on earth as smarmy as Winkleman?
Every guest is brilliant, wonderful, marvellous, superb, beautiful,a marvellous dancer who is getting better every week blah blah blah,
She ladles the praises on with an enormous spoon and gushes all over every guest on her show.
What world does she live in?

At a guess i'm going to say thats what she's paid to do - her intellect is well known so i'm fairly certain this is a character she portrays for ITT and the weekend shows rather than her actual personality, the old "mad as a spoon" claudia on prev series was fantastic - this year agreed it's gone too far into bottom licking sycophancy - which isn't so entertaining to watch

I love your posts Abbasolutely they are so incisive, intelligent, informative and amusing. Have you ever considered a career in writing?

We do occasionally get glimpses of the 'old' Claudia (eg her 'handing out pizza' doing Lens rumba hands) but I wish she'd stop beginning every training update with "I think this looks brrrilliant" and taking every word Karen Hardy says as gospel.

In the earlier series I think that Claudia was being her own quirky personality but I feel that she now plays a ditzy character

Hmmm.

Quote:
“unctuous = characterized by excessive piousness or moralistic fervor, esp. in an affected manner; excessively smooth, suave, or smug.

—Related forms
unc·tu·ous·ly, adverb
unc·tu·ous·ness, unc·tu·os·i·ty”

Two points:

1) Are you sure you know the meaning of the word 'unctuous'? Claudia is hardly the moralistic type and I wouldn't have called her smooth or smug either.

2) If you're going to assume a superior intellectual stance by using ridiculous words to characterise your thread titles, do you think you could spell them correctly?

Abba's entitled to her opinion. I don't see the need to be rude because it differs to your opinion

I think you're missing the point, unless i'm missing the point. I thought both were being ironic.

Nope , I wasnt , I was simply sticking up for Claudia and seemingly the OP only wanted negative posts on her thread ,.

I've had the pleasure of working with Claudia a few times and I can truthfully say she is an utterly lovely lady, professional from her conk down to her shoes. She's a vastly more intelligent and entertaining presenter than the very bland, though tall, Tess "The Ostrich" Daly. Her humour has always been a tad off the wall and I thoroughly enjoy ITT - I wish Claude was presenting the mainshow, and I heard the name of Graham Norton mentioned - that would be a stunning combination!

I agree with Abba. I think Claudia is great on ITT and I'd hate to see someone else doing the job.

As a self-confessed pedant, I think that unctuous is not an appropriate adjective for Claudia. Even to her detractors, I don't see that it applies.

Sycophantic is perhaps more suitable.

Indeed, although I'd maintain my suspicion that her sycophancy is motivated by the producers' requirements rather than her own desire to disappear up the fundaments of the celebrated persons to whom she is a sycophant.

The day John Sergeant announced his withdrawal Claudia ran a one-hour ITT at 6pm. on BBC2. In no way did she give James an easy ride, but she did not pour oil on a raging fire. The daughter of editor Eve Pollard she would have known the inside story from a tiny tot age. If she is promoting the ITT equivalent of a standing ovation every two minutes, she would have been paid to do it. Not too happy though that she kowtows to presssure. Would have been nice to see you on the barricades Claudia.

She is branching into a movie critique programme now? I have not watched it yet. How is it going?

I agree. Hence the use of the word "perhaps". However, if the OP is insistent on using a derogatory term for Claudia I just want it to be a more applicable one. (Someone's going to slap me quite soon aren't they...?)

Adj. 1. unctuous - unpleasantly and excessively suave or ingratiating in manner or speech; "buttery praise"; "gave him a fulsome introduction"; "an oily sycophantic press agent"; "oleaginous hypocrisy"; "smarmy self-importance"; "the unctuous Uriah Heep"; "soapy compliments"
buttery, fulsome, oleaginous, smarmy, soapy, oily
insincere - lacking sincerity; "a charming but thoroughly insincere woman"; "their praise was extravagant and insincere"

That's nice. Because it seemed as though you were being "unctuous".

How patronising!

If the misspelling offended your sensitivities perhaps you are assuming a superior intellectual stance.

I like Claudia but preferred the old kooky persona. However I always thought she copied the oddball image from Davina. That being said I've no doubt that her overly gushing approach this years is the result of strict instructions from the producers.

I think Claudia's approach gets more out of the celebs and dancers than if they were coming onto the show expecting that they might have to be defensive.

When she raises criticisms, they are usually not her own, so the interviewees feel more relaxed about responding and may be more humourous - ITT is light entertainment.
