I don't recall any of these three opening the show so far.

Surely it's only fair they take their turn to do so?

Oh I do love a good stat!

Totally agree though..... to have Pamela and Kara go first twice when there are 4 contestants who haven't been first once seems a tad unfair.

The dance order isn't random, but I doubt the producers would ever do it just on fairness. They're thinking about how to make a good show, how to keep viewers watching right to the end, how to balance out the good dances and the bad ones, how to end the show on a high (or a funny low).

I doubt they'll have Ann on first because she's a talking point. They don't want to have her on too early in case people switch over as soon as she's finished. Conversely I'm sure there are plenty (like me) who would not bother switching on until 15 minutes into the show if we knew Ann would be on first!

I agree, and I would add that Pamela having to go twice first and then second in the last three weeks is rather odd.

I know it probably doesn't make any difference, but it's a tad unfair if there are so many couples who haven't gone first at all.

Thanks Buddy - I didn't realise Scott hadn't gone first either.

It's not really fair on the likes of Pamela and Kara who have opened the show twice now!

Gosh, Ann & Anton have been getting away with murder, haven't they? Well - double murder if you take their other mortal sins into account.

A few of the decisions may also been motivated by the complexity of people' props, like the doors for Jimi and Flavia the week they went first, or Scott and Natalie when they went last. Ann also went last the week she flew.

I also thought it was odd that, if the producers are interested in balance, they put Matt and Scott together at the end of last week - they're both boys and they're both good, so you'd think they'd have been further away from each other to balance out all the ladies.

As Ann is the star of the show, I wouldn't be surprised if they put her on towards the end of the show or even last to ensure viewers watch to the end, especially as its the first show at Blackpool this series.

***Guffaws and shakes her head***

I'm pretty sure that in the old days (), the order of dancing wasn't so blatantly ratings orientated. If I get a chance I'll have a look later.

I've come to the conclusion that sometimes ignoring something is the better line to take.

Thanks for all your work by the way. I don't remember from previous years, I know people always got a bit upset about the order, but I think this year is strange.

The first show at Blackpool???!

Um I think they went there last year and they have definitely been there in past series.

Can't be bothered to respond to the rest of your post TBH!

I've changed my post to make it clear that I meant this series. Its hard to say that Ann isnt the biggest draw on the show, and putting her on towards the end does help the show build up to a peak from the producers point of view.

Its most unfair to have some people go first more than once when others havent gone first at all..........Pamela particularly should be last or near to last this week. Ann should definately be first but I very much doubt she will be.

It's very unfair.

Ann isn't the star of the show in our house!

Going first isn't a disadvantage. Going second or third is. There's been studies and everything (tragically). For example this series, nobody who'se been on first has been eliminated or bottom two. However of the people on second, two have been eliminated, and another was bottom two.

Totally agree Sid but the BBC is very clever in keeping Ann towards the middle or end.
One good thing though it doesn't seem to be causing too much of a problem for Kara and Artem so far.

Those who dance later are fresh in the mind of the voter , as opposed to the early dancers whose impact , or not , can fade.

I agree going first and putting in a stunning performance can be an advantage as it sticks in peoples minds and makes it harder for others to follow.

Do any of these studies explain away the difficulty that going first brings with it, as you're usually marked lower because the judges haven't established their frame of reference?
Monkseal

I think they're of reality tv shows in general, rather than of Strictly. Also to take the "going on first effect" in terms of judges scores into account in a study, you'd have to establish it as fact, rather than perception, which would be difficult.

I guess in turn, this is sometimes countered by voters running to that couple's defence because they see them as being hard done by.

So many variables affecting everything!
