iOS update help

DS'ers,
I've got a second gen ipod touch running iOS 3.1.2. I just bought a gadget for it the other day that requires iOS 3.1.3 to work. Now when I launch itunes it offers me version 4.1 but when I click update it warns me that I could lose all my music and everything What should I do? I am using a Mac if that helps.

Update it? The Touch will be backed up, the OS installed and everything will be but back the way it was after syncing.

If you have complete iTunes library with audio/video/apps on your mac you just resync it after the update.

I have my itunes on it but does the update delete them off the ipod or off the Mac?

From the ipod. If you feel paranoid, you can copy your itunes library on the side, but there's no reason for the update process to delete the library off your computer. They probably changed a structure how the files are loaded on the device, so rather than migrate data they wipe the device clean and reload it again in a "modern" way.

I'll think about it again, I don't really want to lose all my play counts and everything (I have quite a lot). Any way you can download the 3.1.3 update?

Not sure why you're getting a warning message. You shouldn't lose anything on a standard update - on the same computer it is already synced with. Have you checked the Apple Discussion Forums for the error message you are getting?

No I'll have to check them and see.

I think it's a standard message that the device will be wiped clean, they are installing that image via restore. In the case you do not have the itunes library, you would end up with nothing. That's what the warning is about.

I think you get this warning if you try to update before you have finished syncing it.

Firts off connect up to your computer. Then allow iphone/pod to fully sync and finish. Then click on the update button to run the update.

I tried to update before the sync had completed and got a similar message to you.
