Does any one know what the cheapest (and fairly decent) DVD recorder is on the market?

If you are after the very cheapest the Liteon 5001 is £150 from Comet or Currys (one or other) but it has no RGB or S-Video in and no NICAM decoder. There is also a Yamada from Richer Sounds also at £140 quotes a good What Hifi? review. Up to £230 gets you a Panasonic E55 from Richer which is that I have and is very good indeed.

One budget player that has received consistently good reviews is the Toshiba SD-330E which if you shop around online can be currently purchased for around £80.
If you want to go cheaper still - try the EKE N339MF available from companies such as www.aria.co.uk for around £40.

Confused, the request was for DVD reorders!
The Philips DVDR70 is £180 at Richersounds. Has RGB input, NICAM sound, crap OSD, good recordings though.

By the way, I bought a Philips DVDR890 just under a couple of years ago - I have been pleased with it but now discover it has an inherent fault in that after some 200hrs of use, mainly watching rather than recording, the picture now freezes solid or jumps about a bit and skips chapters. Philips Technical Dept has acknowledged the fault by extending the guarantee period on them to 2 years. So if you have one and it's playing up contact Philips and they will arrange for it to be fixed free of charge.

Not stupid just very, very dangerous !
Many people have very strong views on this but though I prefer +R it is really down to what you want the recorder to do. Both formats (and Ram) will continue for the forseeable future and do a similar job, up to now -R (and Ram) has had the only HDD Recorders but there is now at least one for +R format.
It is a difficult decision, as I prefer -R as I have found those disc's play on more machines than the +R, but as new players come out that gap diminishes all the time.
I was reading about on Asian company called Liteon the other day in the news who is big in Asia and is investing in buiding about 10 times as many DVD recorders as it did last year.
Today I noticed this player on play.com that looks really good.

We've sold loads of the £150 Liteon DVD recorders, but they all have an inherent fault.
If you want to watch a DVD on another machine, it needs to be finalised. No problem if you use DVD+RW's, but come to use DVD+R's, then when finalising, the Liteon renders the discs unplaybale on anything but itself.

Out of intrest is the £199 play.com Liteon box the same as the one you sell for £150?
Are the makers of this box going to issue a software update / take in the boxes to change them to resolves this issue?

And I have no idea about software upgrades, I imagine you'd have to contact Liteon direct.
Currys/Dixons will (currently) refund/excange the faulty box as per the instructions from Liteon, so you aren't going to get a software update/fix via the store either.

Assuming the £199 play.com Liteon player has this fault resolved (fingers crossed) would you say it is a good buy , from you opinion?

True and no RGB is a downside with the Liteon , they have a good idea but they have cut some essential corners. When is Philips launching a sucessor to the E55? So it drops it price. I might consider one then as it seems to get thumbs up all around.
The E55 is a Panasonic, and is in fact a newer vesion of the E50 so dont expect a new model very soon. It is £230 from Richer Sounds.
Anyone got any ideas what is wrong with my Lite-on 5001?
It records ok on dvd+rw, but it always pauses when played back. It pauses on my other Sony dvd player too when played back. With me recording on a DVD+RW, it does not need finalising . Only on DVD+R i am told. What then could be causing this problem ? I ready to throw it through the window. !!!
Is it something i have missed in my settings ? I am recording from a PAL Samsiung portable in the kitchen via a Sky digi box. Maybe my connections are wrong ? I just don`t know. It simply records then puses for ages when playing back. HELP PLEASE !!!!

I bought the Panny E55 from Richer Sounds for about £210.
I found it at about £220 on one of their approved Price Beat internet sites and they sold it to me £10 cheaper.

The panny E55 is a good player/recorder for it`s price. Unfortunately, as with most lower end price recorders it does not have the DV Input to link upto my camcorder.
Generally, to get a recorder with DV Input you are talking in excess of £350.00. The Lite-On had this feature hence why i bought it.
Anyone else know of any other recommended player with this feature at a good price ?
