Why are people still tuning in?
If this show is such a fix, and people are disgruntled about so many aspects of it, why are the viewing figures still absolutely sky-high? Why are viewers not just giving up on the programme?

Freak show. That's all. Like going to watch Christians getting mauled by lions or the elephant man in a Victorian fairground.
That's why I watch anyway.

Cos its late November - dark, freezing cold (and going to get colder). So people have nothing better to do.

I like a bit of comedy on a Saturday night it's like watching Eurovision these days. Half of them can hardly hold a tune and the ones that can are as boring as f*ck or too up their own arses for their own good.

Two reasons
One is that its the closest thing we get these days to a genuinely 'water cooler' show. So many people I know watch the show it is a regular topic of conversation throughout the week. Even if people hate it, they still want to talk about it. Secondly, as something of a student of human nature, I enjoy watching all the manipulation / audience massaging / psychology of the the show. I've long since given up on it as any kind 'talent search'. I don't vote, and I have very slim expectations that ANY of this years crop will have a long term career in the music business. So, its the 'human zoo' aspect that keeps me interested. |
