The update has started to roll out, but Apple has multiple servers and it takes a while for each of them to start offering an update.

I heard 'from 6pm'.

So set your alarm to 6pm. Or 7 pm for some iPhone owners .

It's not a rumour, it's been on Apple.com for several hours now.

You need a current generation iPhone (iPhone 4), iPod touch (fourth generation) or iPad to enable the feature though (it can then be used on any supported iOS device).

If you only have an iPhone 3GS, you can't get it for free.

It is for ip4, not for 3gs or 3g

Son really disappointed that all the good features (text tone, find iphone etc) he was looking forward to are not available on the 3GS. Apple does it again...

The reality is 4.2 does nothing to improve 3G or 3GS, no new features and my 3G still runs as crap as ever, I've had enough and am reverting to 3.1.3

Annoyed? Yes.

Apple have really taken a bad move today.

iOS4.2 - what is different on the 3GS?
New icon for Voice Memo
.com button on keyboard has more options

Why is Find my iPhone limited? Why are the new tones 4 only?

What are they hoping to gain from this?

Its simple that you buy the iPhone 4, thats is all iOS 4 has been about. Apple fail to forget the 3GS is still on sale and the 3G was on sale right up until June this year, some people are in 2 years contract, Apple don't give a shit

Anyone tried AirPlay?

The way I understood it when it was first mentioned, was that you could use it to stream videos/music to any iDevice.

Now though, from what I gather, its only use is for streaming to an AppleTV?

Or have I got it completely wrong?

It's only for streaming from iOS devices to AppleTV as far as I know.

You can stream audio from an iOS device to an AirPort Express or an AppleTV. You can stream video from an iOS device to AppleTV.

I'm disappointed 3GS customers don't get the new Text Alerts.

I fail to see how the iPhone 3GS can't handle said ringtone files

Just wasted 10-20 mins updating mine as nothing has changed whatsoever (have 3G).

Think it's time to jailbreak once again.
