Cornish pasty recipe

Does anyone have a recipe for home made cornish pasties that they could recommend?

My gf loves them, and I remember my Grandmother cooking hundreds of pasties.

I imagine that they would be relatively easy to make (hopefully!) and worth it for the home made taste.

Also I have been given a turnip the size of a human head, so I have plenty of that particular ingredient!

I've made this recipe, it does look like a whole load of fannying about, but they are seriously good.

EDITED TO ADD; there is also an instruction video on the link.

I really dislike Cornish pasties - I'm just not into the whole turnip / beef combo but if I can use my own stew then all the better!

This is my Aunty Vi's recipe:

Roll out puff pastry into circle the size of a plate. Chop onions, potatoes and swede up in fairly large chunks. Chop up some skirt beef into smaller chunks. Mix up with seasoning (plenty of pepper). Put on one half of puff pastry circle. Sprinkle on bisto and put pats of butter on top of other ingredients (butter mixes with bisto to make a rich gravy). Fold over, crimp, glaze and cook.

What is different is the puff pastry (you can use shortcust), the bisto and butter and the larger chunks. It was always the size of a dinner plate and you had half for one meal hot and half the next day cold with tomato ketchup.

Thanks all, these look great! I'll track down the BBC bake off recipe too.

Especially intrigued by Aunty Vi's puff pastry huge pasty version!

I'll let you know if I've tried any of them.

My recipe wouldn't be too much different to that.

To be honest and not wanting to offend Cornish people I now make slices and not the traditional shape and that's because it's easier and more economical to get squares/rectangles out of bought, pre-rolled puff pastry

Pretty easy for the filling. Small dice of potato, swede, onion and skirt steak, salt and plenty of black pepper.
Put it in raw, the veg doesn't have to be par boiled.

Wish I could be bothered to make them, I love CPs.

What are the best ones that you can buy?

It depends where you live but the best for me are Philps in Hayle and Marazion and there's a little place in St Ives, near the Sloop which is good (it also sells soup made by 'mama' and the pasties are home made but I don't know the name).

Annie's pasties at the Lizard are legendary but they've run out the last few times we went there.

(Some of these places do mail order).

Yes, somewhat obviously, the best ones I have ever had were bought in Cornwall. Years ago now, though so I have no recollection of specific places.

On the same site try Paul Hollywoods scone recipe, they are the best I've ever baked. He uses strong bread flour with 5 teaspoons of baking powder, I was really sceptical at first but they are by far the best.

Asda's new 'made in Cornwall' ones are very good, as are Sainsbury's ones.

On a taste test the other day a devon pasty came out on top even beating Ann's Pasties.

I can only comment on ones that I've personally tasted.

Well, it was a Devon pasty. Wars have been started over less.

Sorry, it was a Cornish pasty made by a Devon company.
