Doctor Who seems to be one of very few BBC shows made with international sales in mind - the usual 45 minute slot obviously filled a commercial slot nicely, whilst 65 minutes would fill the 90 minute slot.

Very quiet for the last weekday of the official ratings year. Channel Ten had a real stinker with some shockingly low figures, only cracking 600k once in prime and beaten by ABC. H&A was also on the low side for its season finale.

Elsewhere, the Indiana Jones premiere rated fairly well for a Friday, and The Silence got off to a good start all things considered.

Indeed, it's the Geordies who seem worst affected.

And they don't mind the cold anyway.

A few things on DigiGuide (well, UK TV Guide) that have slipped through the radar:

- The Apprentice Final is labelled as 2 hours, I believe this was also done last year when it was on a Sunday
- There is no 2nd episode of Coronation Street on Monday 20th December, it is only on at 19:30. You've Been Framed! Christmas Special is on at 20:30. Presumably they are near to their yearly quota, so can't have a full week, plus an hour on Xmas Day.
- BBC and ITV run 'as normal' until Thursday 23rd December, although BBC1 does have a few films on in the afternoon.
- Daybreak is on for Xmas Eve, which I find slightly surprising.
- BBC1 on Xmas Eve has Shrek the Halls at 16:55 with The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian at 17:25. BBC News is at 19:35.
- ITV1 on Boxing Day has The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor at 18:25, Harry Hill's Christmas TV Burp at 20:30 and Poirot at 21:00. Unfortunate that Harry is clashing with EastEnders.

It's a very interesting article, actually. Chiles does make some good points in there - the big launch I think is one of them. And Chiles has probably also put himself in the running for I'm a Celebrity next year as well.

Not really, Xmas Eve breakfast on TV and radio is always normal as many people are still going to work.

These are only drafts - useful pointers, but not really worth talking of specific clashes until we actually know whether they are real.

The repeats air at 22:35. That is a really good figure - and actually higher than a lot of the STV opt-outs on ITV1. What it does mean though is that in the other nations, BBC1 only had 1.1m on Monday night given that it had 1.7m including Scotland.

Hasn't Daybreak just gone back to what it was averaging in the beginning? The ratings only dipped due to half term. So it hasn't been increasing. Ratings don't in any way make up for the criticism anyway and if now even Adrian Chiles is having a go then how embarrassing for ITV. Surely the whole point was to improve on GMTV's average by quite some margin, which it hasn't, but not only that the main goal was to topple the mighty BBC Breakfast. So far, this hasn't happened and I doubt ever will.

I read that first run episodes used to get 60% shares in Scotland. It's probably more popular there than The X Factor...


Good scheduling by ITV, but it's a bit of a travesty that lightweight fluff like this will probably make the Top 20 shows of 2010 with the 9-10m "audience" it will inevitably get.

Looks like you're back to over-predicting again! I'm a Celebrity gets 9-10m after TXF on Saturday nights so it's extremely unlikely that Take Me Out (a show which normally gets 4.5-5m) will suddenly rise to 9-10m even though it's scheduled after TXF final!

I've read the article and it sounds as if Chiles is planning his escape strategy.
When did the programme peak at 1.4 million - perhaps the first day.
It had one morning at 900,000 and is stuck at about 800,000 which is slightly less than GMTV's final few shows.
When it reached 900,000 the other day BBC Breakfast was 1.6 million so in real terms Daybreak hasn't taken any significant number of viewers from the BBC.

To be fair to Adrian, his analysis of what's happened is spot on.

Firstly, everyone involved at ITV - especially Peter Fincham, Alison Sharman and Adrian himself - were guilty of hubris. They thought it was a no-brainer that the show would be a runaway success once the famous Chiles-Bleakley on-screen 'chemistry' had been hired. In fact, they got so carried away with this idea, they forgot that the show also needed a good format and some decent content.

Secondly, they were way too dismissive of GMTV - and by publicly describing it as "crap" (as the new editor did) they were showing a contempt for the hard-core viewers that remained. The fact that they've slowly been changing the Daybreak set to make it more GMTV-esque is a huge admission that they were wrong.

If they keep making changes, responding to viewers' tastes in the morning, the ratings may well improve further, particularly as the BBC opposition is very staid and boring. But they've a very long way to go. The recent recovery is a bit overstated...sure they got 900,000 one day this week, but ITV has been trailing it massively during IAC and X-Factor, and the channel bosses have decreed that any exclusive interviewees go on Daybreak, rather than This Morning and Alan Titchmarsh. With that sort of support, the ratings simply had to respond. Even so, they were back down to 800,000 - just half of what BBC is getting - by the later part of the week.

Yes It gets around a 18-20% share daily which was what it was getting in late September, it gets a slight boost on Monday from having the latest The X factor loser on, which is heavily promoted the night before.
When it was getting 800k/900k back in September BBC Breakfast was getting 1.4m. Now Breakfast is usually at 1.5/1.6m. so the gap has actually widened in that respect.

I actually saw some of it yesterday. It's basically morphed back into GMTV with reports from a Hollywood reporter with a CGI background and TV Matters instead of Talking Telly. They spent the first 10 minutes discussing 'I'm a Celebrity' The set now looks like a cheap Tanning salon complete with artifical flowers.

The blame for Daybreak doesn't lie with Adrian or Christine imo. Any producer who signs off on a Skyline studio like that deserve everything they get.
