Sorry, but I think it's pretty obvious that this is the truth. And to be honest you've become abit of laughing stock amongst people on this forum- including fellow EE fans- with your obsession of Coronation Street being the best.

God, don't enter the soap forums unless you're prepared to take a side. Watched Corrie (have done all week, and I'm not a regular) and thought it was perfectly executed. Not sure it needed to be live in story terms (the 'unpredictability' of the reveal to cast and audience was EE live's strong point), but it still creates an event and should do the ratings a world of good.

The Magicians looks like it'll launch between Indiana Jones and EE on New Years Day, which at least is brave and should give it a great chance on debut. Poor 9pm offerings though with Come Fly With Me (god, they're pushing that one) followed by Live at the Apollo.

For the rest of the week, notable shows in the 9pm slots are:
Sunday: Zen
Monday: Silent Witness
Tuesday: Silent Witness
Thursday: Come Fly With Me / Not Going Out
Friday: Hustle

Seems odd to shift Come Fly With Me to Thursday after two Saturday airings, and didn't the last series of Not Going Out air at 10.35? Not complaining about that slot, mind you. I like it.

Looks like the DOI Launch has been dropped. Also no word on if DOI Friday is returning, I suspect not due to its low figures last series.


Just to add to that (and please ignore this if you hate Twitter stats!), the word 'Corrie' had 621 tweets per minute during its episode. Compare that to 360 tweets per minute for Monday's 8.30pm episode and 475 tweets/min that EastEnders had for its live episode. So it's certainly had an impact in terms of that particular online social networking website, will be interesting to see if that's translated into the ratings...

I dont watch any soap regularly but I have watched both live episodes. I think you are right about the reveal thing on EE. Corrie tonight seemed inch perfect, so much so I would have said it was pre-recorded had I not known. In fact it was almost too perfect at first sight and I actually think it lacked a bit of edge because of it. Just a few sound problems-Bill Roach lines got drowned out and the same in an odd few other places. Other than that it might have come from the editors room for me.

Corrie was excellent. Probs best live piece of TV I've ever seen! No mistakes either. Hoping for something special tomorrow!

ITV really missed a trick by not having a live beind the scenes show after tonight's Corrie episode. It would probably have broken the multichannel record on ITV2.

Yeh you're right, I can't see it being on Saturdays and Primeval will probably continue on Saturdays with the Sunday episode being a one-off for the launch weekend.

I'm surprised they've dropped the launch as that did well but unsurprising about DOI Friday. I suspect either The Dales or Lion Country will get the Friday 8pm slot.

So in other words, if Twitter translated into ratings, you're suggesting tonight's episode could have had 20 million viewers?!

Doing some calculations, based on Monday's rating applied with the 'tweet theory', you get 22.3m and based on EastEnders rating you get 20 million.

(ps. you are taking into account Corrie was an hour while EastEnders was half an hour? If not, then that tweet theory goes out the window)

Nah, the rise in the no. of tweets is not directly proportional to the rise in ratings because one extra viewer can tweet many times etc. But it should at least do a bit better than the Monday episode I'd have thought, maybe quite close to EE's rating.

The point I was trying to make though was that in the grand scheme of things, the Twitter reaction about Corrie Live was quite similar to EE Live's (600 vs. 500) so I suspect in the ratings it was quite close to EE's? But I still maintain it's easier to amass a big audience in February, than the height of the Christmas Party / Shopping / Nativity play season 2 weeks before Christmas.

"Tweet Theory" could become industry standard at this rate. Although it sounds like something you would only learn about by watching Horizon.

I think Coronation Street will edge Eastenders, the build up episodes have had higher ratings and the casual viewer element should be considerable( Eastenders added 4 million or so)-if that is replicated then surely C/S will triumph. The only drawback for casual viewers is the fact that the show ran as though it was recorded and had very little spark if, like me, you did not know the storylines and were either waiting for something big to happen, or someones wig to fall off.

Lol presumably-and perhaps irritatingly, we will get the HD reduced figure first.

So we've only had 2 confirmed deaths and a wedding in Corrie so far (the 2 characters whose demise were spoilt by The Sun a while back...)

Yeah I agree with this. Jan/Feb are always the biggest months for the soaps, so I expect EE will still be ahead in the chart for 2010. But credit, where credit's due. Tonights episode was outstanding!!

Also the official ratings will make for very interesting readings. All 13m+ it's looking like!!

I'm thinking around 15m for Corrie tonight. I went with 14.9m on the RPG but I think it could edge 15m now, although I don't think it'll quite manage to top EE.

On another note, Frankie Boyle's Tramadol Nights has generated a fair bit of controversy today, and it looks like things could get even uglier between him at Katie Price and her lawyers. Presuming C4 continue with the show (I assume they will) this could give it something of a boost as it didn't rate too well this week. Although it did get about the same as Chris Moyles on Monday and wasn't too far behind the sort of ratings that Chattyman/8 Out of 10 Cats get so I'm not dismissing it as a total flop yet considering the disaster of a lead-in it has (that it has built on for both episodes).

As interesting as speculating whether the sun will come up tomorrow.

As sure as the sun will rise in the morn, then tonight's live Corrie will easily surpass EE Live in the ratings. 16m for Coro St i reckon, possibly 17m (peak of that anyway).

It's had much more publicity, been promoted on practically every TV and radio show, including news bulletins across all networks, weeks of publicity and promotion, and aired on the 4th day of a massive week of stories all covering the one big event.

EE Live was pretty much a regular episode that just happened to be done live, with the announcement of a plot denouement right at the end. And EE Live was on a Friday, the lowest-rated night of the week.

No, Corrie will win with ease for the simple reason it had so much more going in its favour than EE did. But from what I saw of both live eps, I thought EE was executed far better - a bit more ambition, dialogue, drama than a fairly pedestrian and sedentary Coro St, reliant heavily on special effects and distractions (fires, rubble, emergency services swarming about).

I thought EE had a bit more verve about it, like a gripping piece of theatre. Corrie looked like a live broadcast of a soap.

It would be a shame if Coro topped the soap ratings this year, if not the overall ratings. It has had to go to pretty extreme lengths to coerce people into watching it. EastEnders did it on merit.


You need to watch more live TV then.

It really hasn't had much more publicity, was on ITV News on Monday ( not tonight actually suprisingly) but was on BBC1's 10 at least today and how has Corrie gone to "pretty extreme lengths to coerce people into watching it" - it's promoted it. Just like EE's was promoted on half the BBC radio stations!

And although EE Live was pretty much a regular episode that just happened to be done live as you say - it did have the announcement of a plot denouement right at the end - so it was the clifhanger that eveyones had been dying to hear since for about 6 weeks beforehand, from Xmas Day.

EE Live was on a Friday, the lowest-rated night of the week. But for Corrie isn't Thursday it's lowest night of the week i think?

For me Coronation Street deserves to top the year's ratings on tonight's episode (it's just an opinion!) but will it? I don't think so. It'll be a damnsight closer than I originally thought it would be but EastEnders will still win through.

Coronation Street did do well last night in an unusual slot for it and I guess the football did ok for ITV too though it hurt News at Ten. BBC1 had a good night, though I'm surprised they still haven't tried to 'anchor' Wednesday's more.
