A friend of mine wants to buy a christmas present for her husband.

Her husband has a prehistoric Palm Pilot and she wants to buy him a replacment product which is a little more up to date however she doesnt want to take out a contract phone ie blackberry and she wants to spend under £200 any suggestions?

Many thanks

An iPod Touch would fit the bill.

It can be used for email, web, contacts, calendar, also video, games and of course, music.

The 8Gb model is under £200, and for one day only (today, Friday) you can get one with £15 off the RRP.

The base model iPod Touch is £170 in Argos until Tuesday. But Apple direct is better to avoid the queues at Argos these days.

That's like the modern equivalent. I'm getting one of the new ones for Christmas and my old one fried itself this afternoon

Really depends whats wanted but you get far more function with the San Francisco at £110.
Unlockable for free and usable on just wifi if need be.

A very high quality screen plus the extra functionality of a phone, GPS and a memory car slot.
And google apps are always improving so much of that functionality will be cross device.
I just can't think of a better smartphone under £200

Not a bad idea. However, unlike a smartphone, the iPod will sit in 'standby' for literally weeks, which is ideal for a device that may see only occasional use.
