Corrie's Greatest Ever Female Characters
For me it would have to be:
Karen McDonald Blanche Hunt Leanne Battersby Alma Halliwell Carla Connor Rita Sullivan Linda Baldwin (Sorry I'm too young to remember the golden oldies such as Annie Walker, Elsie Tanner, Hilda Ogden and Bet Lynch) What does everyone think?

As with the other main thread on 'greatest' characters, I think it's really impossible to do this properly unless you have seen the entire 50-year run. If you've only seen the last 20 years, then it really becomes "my favourite characters". I find it extremely unlikely that anyone who has been watching the show for 20 years or more would put characters like Sophie or Sian or Fiz in a 'greatest' list.
I'm tempted to say that the greatest characters are USUALLY a combination of those whose names are known outside the soap by those who rarely or never watch it or who have held a role for a very long time (we all know that if producers think a character has run its course, they get shot of them). I think that would result in something like: Bet Lynch, Mavis Riley/Wilton, Rita Fairclough/Sullivan, Emily Bishop, Deirdre Barlow, Elsie Tanner, Annie Walker, Hilda Ogden and Ena Sharples. Perhaps Vera Duckworth too? I don't think Blanche Hunt was QUITE as household as those, but anyone who didn't think she was one of the greats should probably be committed to an asylum. For those who doubt it, look at the hole she has left.... There are others who are great characters too like Racquel and Karen who I would class as great but not greatest. |

Having thought about it (god what a dull day I must be having) and based on my earlier rationale, I think I would also consider adding Betty Turpin/Williams into the list. After all, even those who don't watch are aware of Betty's hotpots...

Karen McDonald was my favourite and I was so gutted I stopped watching when she left
I do wish Suranne Jones would go back, the chemistry between her and Simon Gregson was electric!!*starts petition to bring her back*

I didn't watch with the likes of Ena, Elsie, Annie and Hilda but aware they will and should always be on the list, earliest I remember is Bet and Alec Gilroy running the Rovers.
Sitl doing the list though Raquel, my favorite of all time Bet Vera Rita Deirdre Blanche Betty Emily Mavis Sally Gail Alma Audrey Hayley Cropper, she can be classed as female right? Tanya, played by Eve Pope, great bitch and I always remember her stint Leanne Toyah Karen Carla I think Carla is my fav most recent character, who I think has real potential in becoming an iconic female corrie character if she sticks around. I think Karen was a great character too. Becky would have been on the list a year ago as well, but I am a bit turned of at the moment with the new Whiny Becky married to Steve and all that comes with it. |

From an 18 year old's perspective my list is:
Carla Karen Sally Liz Rita Shelley Denise Welch's character (temporary mind blank!) Karen McDonald is for me the most recent actress who i would put in the "greatest" category, but i do think that Carla Connor is an incredible character and Alison King a very very good actress. With the storylines she has had, and is yet to have, and if she sticks around a bit longer, I can really see her being one of the icons in say 10 years time

Agree about Carla, an all round amazing character, I'll never forget her understated reaction to Sally telling her that she had cancer, those scenes were so well done and Alison King really nailed it as she was true to her ballsy character.
