Ok, lots of confusion about this but of all the songs he's supposed to be singing, several seem less than promising or inapropriate to me.

Nights in White Satin: This is just shit. It's one of those songs I just laugh at. It's absurd!

House of the Rising Sun: Great song. He'll have no problem with it. It'll go down well I guess.

Walking in the Air: not sure he's got the voice for this one to be honest.

Welcome to the Jungle: Who's idea is this? Matt needs to question whether these people have his best interests at heart. I suspect this idea has come from the same source as Come Together.

I Love Rock n Roll: Tw*t of a song. However well he does it vocally, it's monumentally limited and he's sure to look stupid.

Smalltown Boy: well, we know he can do the dance and the song aint the worst.

With or Without You: Best of the bunch. He'll do great.

We Will Rock You: Awful song! Queen at their worst (and they were never far off shit at their best)

Overall, if most of these suggestions aren't just somebody's idea of a laugh and / or smokescreen, Matt needs to accept that there are people there out to do him harm

Agree with your post entirely!

House of the rising sun and with or without you would be his best bets out of that list.

Agree with you there! There's lots of confusion about what he's singing..my guess is we'll find out tomorrow night when he comes on stage

Did you hear he has tonsillitis? there could be a few back up tracks maybe just in case his throat/voice couldn't handle plan A&B?

Haven't heard anything about Smalltown Boy or Walking in the Air..Is it SB by Bronski Beat? that would suit his voice! Good song

Pretty much agree (although I like "Nights in White Satin").

Seems they might be trying to knock him down a few notches to level the playing field.

Whatever poor song they might have given him this week, I hope Matt manages to work some magic and do well. Hey, when you're dealt lemons, make lemonade.

I totally disagree. I love that song and if Matt does it I hope he does it well or he will go even further down in my estimation than he did after Come Together.

It is however one of those songs that Simon either loves or hates versions of so he could be on a hiding to nothing if he messes up with it.

A contestant performed it on American Idol a couple of years ago and Simon slaughtered him for it. It was one of the contestants Simon had championed up until then and if I remember rightly he ended up going out that week.

No one knows at the moment which songs he is singing;
Nights in Satin is one of the most famous love songs only the uninitiated would frown on this song take look on Youtube to all of the famous artists that have sung this song. YOu want song craft here it is in this one song.;

I can't see any genuine music lovers liking Nights In White Satin, it will appear to the fans of lady in red, my heart will go on etc

Tell you who it won't appeal to, the audience Matt was trying to attract with his album

I love the Moody Blues but have never really got the fuss over NIWS. That said, it's nothing like Lady in Red, My Heart Will Go On, etc, and as mitacond said, it has been covered by a multitude of artists in many different genres. In another show where the contestants have more control over the arrangements of their songs, Matt could well make something like this his own but probably not on XF.

If Matt is signed, win or not, I don't think his album is likely to bear any relation to his previous albums anyway. His main support seems to be coming from middle-aged women and Simon usually likes to, as he says, "play to your audience".

Initiated to what? - the land of the cheesy boring ballads.

Looked at that list it includes Il Divo and Jennifer Rush (a cheesy ballad queen) LOL.

Agree with your post entirely!

House of the rising sun and with or without you would be his best bets out of that list.
Count me in as another one that agrees.

why do people think "middle aged women" don't like rock music?? my mother is 65 and she was brought up on Chuck Berry and Little Richard, my generation was punk - why do people assume that we all now like Celine Dion ballads?

Well I can tell you one thing, I doubt WOWY is one of his songs.

I mean the obvious song to give Matt - stand out U2 track that suits his voice - even Louis said he had a touch of the Bonos about him............nah, they let Mary have U2!

Where do these rumours start? People on Twitter are going to be very disappointed re WOWY.

If he gets WWRY - we'll know it was a Simon choice - no way in hell would Dannii choose that, even the puppies 1D have a classic track.

I'd say Katie has better songs this week than Matt !!

Oh bugger, and I swore I wouldn't start whinging!

I don't doubt it's fame, nor its popularity amongst the more puke-embracing section of the recording community. It's one of those songs I remember first hearing and thinking I maybe had to stand up to listen to, like the national anthem. It's pompous and has a sickly faux solemnity. Totally over the top. Lots of other songs fit this catagory. Stairway to Heaven, Let It Be etc but of all of them this, for me stands out for it's absurdity. That said, I'm doubtless in the minority and it'll likely go down a storm on X Factor.

Well there are middle aged women and middle aged women.
There are those who are born middle aged and love MOR music throughout their lives and there are the baby boomers who were 60s rock chicks.
Narrow stereotyping of an entire demographic rarely works in practice.

Likewise. It annoys me that with their huge and varied back catalogue, this is the thing that gets churned out time and time again.

The only thing I find remarkable about this song is that it was written by a 17 year old.

Totally agree.

However if Matt does sing it, I hope he fairs better than Sundance Head did with it on American Idol 2008 when he was one of the favourites and his rendition was so surprisingly poor he ended up going out that week. Matt has some ground to make up with the neutrals after last week’s attempt.

I’m not too keen on that because it’s a cover and the original was so much better.

Not a patch on Question, I’m Just a Singer in a Rock & Roll Band, Your Wildest Dreams, I Know You’re Out There Somewhere, The Other Side of Life, Tuesday Afternoon, The Actor, Voices in the Sky, Lovely to See You, Never Comes the Day, Are You Sitting Comfortably?, Gypsy, Candle of Life, It’s Up to You, The Story in Your Eyes, One More Time to Live, New Horizons, The Land of Make Believe, Driftwood, The Voice, Talking Out of Turn, In My World, 22000 Days, Nervous, Blue World, Running Water, Vintage Wine, Breaking Point, Deep, Say What You Mean, Never Blame the Rainbows for the Rain, English Sunset, Haunted, Sooner or Later, The Swallow, December Snow ……………………. So many great songs over a 40+ years multi-platinum career and the one most people know is one of their weakest.

"Middle-aged woman" here - together with quite a few friends we go to lots of gigs and festivals and enjoy plenty of Rock music - so dont stereotype us all as MOR!

I also happen to love Matts vocals, and hope he does a good rocky number tonight!!!

That suggests they're not a fan of Matt's real music, the Pearl Jam type stuff, I can't see any Pearl Jam fan swooning over Nights In White Satin
