I am sure Cher was using Earphones when singing tonight you could see them hidden behind her Hair. I have never seen that before on the show I would think that is an advantage.

Normally they have speakers on the floor....I wonder why they let her use earphones instead?

Sometimes acts have ear phones playing the music in their ear, so they can keep time. It's good for upbeat songs. Bands do this on tour, it's nothing unusual or cheating.

They have been used before.

Danyl used them last year for instance, and the performances on Sunday always use them.

I do actually wonder why more DONT use them.

Matt had them when he did Hit Me Baby One More Time.

As far as I'm aware, they're used if you need to hear the beat so that you won't be out of time and also the right notes due to the audience being so loud etc.

Could be wrong, though!

There is no advantage in it whatsoever.

Sometimes on stage you cant always hear the music intro so the intro comes through on the earphones.

Once you start to sing though you can easily keep time,

Anyone can use them if they want to.

its purley to allow the artist to hear there vocals with the performance in the ear, when you have a big production or the crowd are clapping/stomping feet etc.

artisits on tour use them. it doesn't affect your vocal or the audio produced, just ensures the artist performing can get their key and follow the beat.

i believe it is optional for all contestants to use them

When "Take That" sang a few weeks back each had a brightly coloured earpiece that matched their microphones.

Although I think one of them didn't have the earpiece.

They called in-ear monitors and every serious artist uses them.

That was JLS, they used the colour that they gave themselves when on X factor.

Pretty much standard practice for live performances these days. I saw Squeeze at a gig last night and they were using them too.

They're less obvious than the old wind machine.

In order to hear the backing track? It's vital for her as she raps.

Matt used it too as he was playing the guitar.

You really don't want to be out of time
