The only thing good about it was the song itself. It's such a haunting song that it's kind of impossible to do just an 'average' rendition of it... you either murder it, or you do a genuinely great performance, or you do an average performance that gets upgraded to being great on account of the song being so well liked. I believe Matt's performance fell into this last category.

Yes, it was probably technically fine and the rest, but - so unoriginal and predictable. Incidentally, I think Aiden probably could have done a genuinely great performance of this song. Such a shame we'll never get to see it. But hey, at least we have Frodo prancing around the stage...

Nope, thought it was the best performance of the series along with his Roberta Flack tune, I don't think the show deserves to have someone as good as Matt on it.

I disagree, a great song is only what you make of it. People made the same argument when Cher sang Stay. In some ways it's harder to do a great song, more to live up to. I'm not a Matt supporter but he did great tonight.

I thought his voice was perfectly suited to the song.

Matt's vocals are haunting... he made the song sound amazing, not the other way around.

Agree 100%.

Matt's version did not stand up to a second listen for me.

I haven't even heard it and yet I'm absolutely sure it was dull, while being overrated by those who like him and underrated by those who don't.

One of the few occasions I feel we've heard Matt himself on the XF lives. Pretty good.

If you liked this song, folks, you could look up his first band Darwyn on iTunes -- the feeling and the energy of their two CDs are reminiscent of this.

That's the long and short of it.

To be honest, after his first performance, it appeared outstanding because nothing could have been worse.

It was good, it was OK. It wasn't mind blowing.

I agree with SC (arg !) : the original version bores me because it's been played and played and i don't even really like the song to begin with, but i've listened to Matt's version 10 times, there's something in his voice i just love.

edit : also, just imagine what some of the other contestants would have done with (or "to" rather) it.

That is when you know a contestant has people worried. Threads opening up to say that the Performance of the Season was average.

Matt is overrated as a singer, period.

His first performance tonight was poor. His second was ok. That's about it.

Do you mean full stop? I hate it when people import these americanisms into our language. Still its better than 'end of' which really gets me going.

Thought Matt's NIWS was the performance of the night. Dont think he's overrated but you are entitled to your opinion (and that is all it is, its not a fact as you have tried to imply) however much the way you say it may irritate me.

This is what the X-Factor is about... instant gratification. On the surface it's amazing and great, but after that it's just a bit dull and predictable.

I don't think the songs Dannii picked last night fits his voice and I didn't like the 2nd performance -- but I guess that's just me

So have just watched all the performances - in fact was only able to watch a couple of them all the way through the first few lines were enough to put me off.

Thought Matt's I love Rock N' Roll was beyond bad but have to admit thought NIWS was damn good and I don't even like the song.

Just found this review...

"Among 14 different performances, only one truly stood out for me. The second chorus of "Nights In White Satin" sung by Matt Cardle was a moment to send chills up your spine. He truly took his vocals to a new level unveiling like another layer of an onion just exactly what he can do with his voice."

Some people on here must have their volume turned down

In the Guardian's liveblog the writer said the performance was insipid and boring and quoting reviews don't really do much. It doesn't really represent of what the public think of his performance -- it's just 1 person's opinion.

He's already in the lead on youtube and itunes this week so the public must like what they hear

I'm sure they do but you can't really use these youtube hits and itunes as a basis because Cher had the most views last week (or every week for that matter) but then she still landed on bottom 2 last week.
