Cher's not a puppet on a screen, she's flesh & blood ..she's scared

X FACTOR EXTRA

At 17, Cher Lloyd should be living the X Factor dream. With her kooky charm and dazzling talent, she is hotly tipped to win the ITV1 show.

But the fragile teenager is living in terror after cyberbullies threatened to kill her for being a gypsy.

One vile post read: "How much would you pay me if I could kill her?" And the hate campaign intensified this week as a fake human skeleton was sent to her parents' house.

Her petrified mother Dina immediately rang police, telling them: "Please help us, they are out to kill my baby."

It is the latest blow to Cher - saved last week by the judges from the final two.

Dina, 36, said: "She's battled so bravely every week. But it hit her so hard when her fans forgot to vote.

"And now this. I was so excited when I saw the parcel with Cher's name on it. I thought it must be a present from an admirer. Thank God Cher didn't open it.

"When I saw what was inside, I was nearly sick. The message was clear: 'If we have our way, this is how your girl is going to end up - dead'.

"Cher's been crying and crying. Inconsolable. But Cheryl has been great. She took Cher to one side and said, 'Don't let it beat you. Get back out there. You can do this'.

"Cher looks up to Cheryl hugely. She is her role model. Knowing that Cheryl is on her side and that Simon thinks she's got talent gives her the strength to go on, whatever happens."

Dina was hoping to spend two hours with her daughter after last week's show - but time would only allow just 10 minutes.

She says: "It's always manic. So we take whatever time we can with her - give her a hug and tell she's doing great. Sometimes it's before, sometimes after the show.

"I speak to Cher on the phone most days but sometimes she's so busy, she can't call. Cheryl's been like a rock.

"Simon, too. He keeps telling her, 'Keep going, you can do it'. Cher has less to do with Louis and Dannii and there has been some hurtful criticism - but she takes it all on board.

"She knows she's only young with a lot to learn still. She shares a room with Katie Waissel, who has been great."

Cowell last week criticised Cheryl's stage choice for her hopeful - dangling from a spiral staircase. But Dina says Cher doesn't blame her mentor for her poor share of the vote.

She says: "Cher listens to what Cheryl has got to say - she has been there and done it. She was bitterly disappointed but she knows she's just got to work even harder.

"She'll do what Cheryl says - she b e l i eve s t h at Cheryl knows what's best." But she adds: "I don't understand where all this hate is coming from.

"Cher and Katie are both lovely, talented girls, and yet they're being turned into the most hated people in Britain while people keep voting for an old man who can't sing. The country's gone mad."

Dina spoke out after it emerged that vicious rumours had been circulating backstage, claiming that Cher had had a "sordid romp" with a stagehand.

She was said to have been caught in a "compromising position" after Saturday's show. Producers launched an investigation but found the stories were false - a slur to wreck her chances.

Dina says: "A couple of supposed boyfriends have come out of the woodwork to tell tales for a few quid and now this.

"But it's all rubbish. Weeks ago, Cheryl told Cher to concentrate on singing and lay off boys. And that's exactly what she's been doing. This show is her life. There's plenty of time in the future for boys and fun. Now is her chance to shine - on her own."

But Dina insists the hate campaign has made her daughter - who had to switch schools after being bullied and beaten up - even more determined to win.

"People forget that this isn't just a television show - this is real life and we're living it. Cher isn't some puppet on a screen. She's a flesh and blood girl with feelings. And yes, she's scared - she's only 17.

"But she's had to put up with abuse all her life. She's used to it. Cher is not going to let a few idiots destroy her dream."

Poison-pen letters have poured into the family's four-bedroom housing association terrace in Malvern, Worcestershire, where Dina lives with her husband Darren and other children Josh, 15, Sophie, 14, and 12-year-old Rosie. Dina - a full-time carer to Darren, 37 - says: "I'm a Romany, and

I'm proud. Cher was born on a caravan park but we moved into a house when she was one. So she's got gypsy in her blood.

What's wrong with that?

"She's had to put up with all the abuse I had growing up. Since X Factor, the letters have got worse - calling us trailer trash, pikey filth and sewer rats. What's the matter with these people?"

Certainly, standing in Cher's childhood bedroom - with a teddy on her leopardprint duvet and faded school prom photos on show - i t i s i m p o s s i b l e t o understand the hatred.

A battered stereo lies in the corner, alongside a clutch of scratched Westlife CDs and congealed pots of nail varnish.

This tiny box room - with its yellow curtains and curling vinyl floor - is where Cher's pop star dream began.

Her mother Dina says: "This is where it all started. Cher grew up singing Dolly Parton - that's all we ever played in the house. She'd practise for hours and hours in her room, then come out and put on a show for us.

"When she was just six, she was already an entertainer, miming to the radio and singing into her hair brush in the front room.

"She'd copy pop stars she saw on the telly.

"When she was eight, she got the starring role in her primary school concert. She sang a Westlife song that just stunned the room. You could have heard a pin drop, then the audience went wild. I knew at that moment she would be a star one day."

Cher - who last night sang Girlfriend and Walk This Way - had applied to the show once before, when she was 14.

Dina says: "She got knocked out on the second day. But we've always loved X Factor. We were watching together last year. I suddenly turned to Cher and said, 'Why don't you enter again next year?' She wasn't sure - so I filled in the application form myself and sent it off. Nobody knew except close family. That way, no one had to know if she didn't get through.

"She's giving it her all. I'm so proud of her for sticking to her guns. The stylists are always trying to make her wear different things but Cher knows what she's like. Eight times out of 10, the outfits are hers."

The family lives on £200-a-week benefits and Dina says: "Everyone thinks we're rich because Cher is on television. But nothing could be further from the truth. We only have an old car and we have to pay for our own petrol and hotel when we go to London for the live show each week.

"That 's o u r o n l y criticism of The X Factor. You'd think with all their money, they could pay to put us up.

"We don't even get to see the city centre. The most we've seen of the capital is Wembley stadium. I've already told the kids they can't have what they want this Christmas. It's all gone on travelling."

Still, they're not quite on the breadline. Their front room is dominated by a 72-inch plasma TV and Sky Box. Two walls are decorated with dozens of minibar miniatures - gin, whisky and Malibu - and their 100ft garden has its own veg patch. But Darren grumbles: "We don't even have a shed."

And Dina insists: "We don't have a bean - we live on a shoestring. But Darren's parents help out - they paid for singing lessons for Cher and a stage coach. When she was 10, they even treated her to a studio session so she could record her own CD of Westlife covers. We were so proud."

Much has been made of Cher's "rough" background. One of her relatives was jailed for six years in 2001 for GBH. Another admitted ABH after beating up a woman in the same incident. Another relative was banned for drink-driving in 2003. When stopped by police, he gave his name as Harry Potter and his address as The Philosopher's Stone.

Darren is unrepentant. "None of it has anything to do with Cher. We may not be angels but we're sure as hell not demons. We've been together for 19 years and our children are all decent.

Cher's brother wants to be a footballer, one of her sisters want to be a police officer and the other wants to be a nurse. How does that make us trailer trash?" Clearly the pressure has told on the fragile teenager - a tiny size six - but Dina insists her daughter has never been healthier or happier.

And her family are fiercely loyal: the windows are covered with Cher posters.

Dina adds: "We believe she can win. But we want her to win for her - not us. We've told her - we don't want a penny."

Just like when she's being criticised or finds herself in the bottom two, she shakes like she's about to suffer a panic attack so the judges show sympathy. Yeah, say what you want about Cher, but she knows how to play the game

Her mom and Katie's have clearly been spending time together. I wished their mums would just keep their mouth shut and let their daughter's performances do the talking.
Sure, report to the cops if there are death threats against her -- but why inform the press about it?

Definitely.

I think it's out of order if this has happened, but they don't do her any favours releasing these stories at the times they do, if it's that bad release the story straight away, not wait for optimum times.

The interview would have been done last week, the Mirror could have printed it earlier. I think its horrible. Nobody should be treated like that

you never can tell what's the truth and what's lies with the tabloids, and yeah I agree, if this story is true, then my heart goes out to the girl. That said, I cant help but think the X Factor spin machine has gone into overdrive with all these newspaper "exclusives" at the weekend (especially Sundays) more than any other year. Cher knows how to play the game when it comes to getting the judges supoort, but Syco sure as hell knows how to get the tabloid press to up interest in the show (in the sense we feel sorry for a particular contestant)

I like Cher but think it is typical of Britain today to be on the breadline yet have a 72" plasma and Sky tv. Oh and Wembley isn't London, It's Greater London or as we prefer to call it, Middlesex.

Exactly. Are we meant to forget all the articles about her being an actually bully in the past? Cher is reinventing herself uin the same way as her mentor.

If this article is true then it is just terrible. Cher's mother called her 'my baby', and that is just what she is, alway crying, too young to handle all the flack that fame and fortune might bring her.

Crikey, you haven't been around long if you think this thread is bad.

And it's really not very nice to wish harm on other people because of their opinions, whatever you think of them.

I agree, why do some people get so stressed and have so much hate in them for two people on a TV show they will probably never meet me thinks some people need help, and quick!

If that is true that is absolutely disgusting, there are some vile, inane excuses of humanity out there

It's peoples views on what is or isn't true, maybe some of us aren't as gulible as some.

It's also the timing of the release of the story that I think is suspect, yes it is terrible but let us know straight away not when Cher needs votes to stay in.

Is it just me who doesn't think the skeleton was a death threat? It's probably more to do with her looks.

Damn, that sounds harsh and bitchy, and I don't mean it to. It's just that I can understand why her family would read that message in to it, but I suspect that the message, while undoubtedly unkind, is more "this is what you look like", than "this is what you will become".
