I think One Direction have improved so much over the last few weeks. If you listen to their vocals week 1 and 2 to their vocals now there is a dramatic difference. Particularly in Zayn and most noticeably in Harry.

Zayn has learnt to sing up, perform and listen to the music for his cues rather than relying on the others.

Harry has gotten over his nerves and stepped up to lead the group. The difference in the control of his voice and his phrasing has been a dramatic improvement and IMO he's only going to get better.

The other three have learnt how to better perform the song and listen to the lyrics and are doing far less cheesy grinning than they used to.

I suppose it takes a while to perfect lipsynching.

I haven't seen much improvement at all.

They seem to sing virtually the same song each week and they bore me to tears. I've been waiting for the big 'wow' moment I expected them to have but it's still the same average performance every week.

It takes a few weeks for the sound-engineers to get the volume levels right on the backing tape.

I think they're weak vocalists.

I think Nobody Knows & The way you look Tonight were amoung their best overall songs. Harry has a good voice, but they need to be careful not to give him too many isolated solos (I think he is better consistently as a sort of power backup). Just because he is the most popular, does not mean they should force him to be front and center (as he was obviously popular before this was the case in the early weeks).

I actually think Louis & Niall could be utilized a little more (Niall did a decent job with Viva la Vida & the other solos he has had). I tend to think Zayn has been more consistent than others seem to think? But overall Liam is the strongest... But he hasn't really been given a song that have much of a power verse (as opposed to all of the intro-verses he sings).

If you can call going from being a complete disaster to just a bit of an embarrassment then I suppose they have progressed. But out of everybody who auditioned for the show, having a group of boys who start the live programmes unable to sing up, to sing in tune, to even move across the stage - it's just pathetic.

Their first performance last night was the usual rubbish - about 3 lines of shaky solo from Liam followed by the backing track taking over while the boys shuffled round in a circle. The second song was meant to silence the critics but all it did for me was prove that Harry doesn't have a good enough voice to be the lead and that Zain is too weak to be given any solo. I don't know what was going on with Liam last night but he seemed to take a big step backwards in both performances.

Overall, they were the worst of the night.

It was OK, except...

Only 3 of them sung.
And they didn't really sing it as a group, it was 3 solo artists performing in turn. No harmonies.

It probably helped that only three of them actually sang any of it - did they really need Niall & Louis onstage at all? They don't need to lipsynch when nobody is even pretending that they're singing.

So many long shots on it so you couldn't see when one or more screwed up on the lipsynching I recall too. They've been caught out too many times.

It was quite beautiful. I am enjoying One Direction more every week. I would not mind at all if they won. And yes, they are probably the most improved of all the competitors.

Also given that Harry and Liam swapped lead vocals during the ad break before they went on, Harry's beautiful lead vocals must have been virtually unpracticed. Imagine how much better they would have been had he had more time to spend perfecting his lines; as it was I thought he sounded absolutely lovely. Harry, Naill and Liam all have wonderful pure voices and hit the notes with more confidence and power than a lot of the other contestants and are singing live vocals more in tune than a lot of the other contestants but because they are young and pretty they never get the credit they deserve imo.

Hmm. I go with the sound engineers taking a while to perfect the technique, and the director reaslising that log shots are best during the miming.

The session singers they use are good though, aren't they?

Not a fan, but I am now especially after their second song. I was in bed with a migraine but that actually cheered me up because it was sung so beautifully!

what makes me laugh on here is that last night mary put the microphone down but her voice kept going the same volume but people on this forum seem to ignore that but have a go at one direction when they changed the lead singer 5 minutes before the performance and still did a fantastic job

You are wasting your time posting about 1D on DS. They just are not liked! I like them but the first song last night was dire. No energy and they looked defeated. i liked their 2nd song and proved what I have always thought that Zain has a good voice and very suited to ballads and Harry suited to rock. Liam has a very strong voice but personally don't like his tone.

They have definately turned down the backing track but you won't convince DS posters that they are singing live no matter how out of tune they are!

Absolutley. And I like Mary, but that was just so obvious, but on here it is like the elephant in the room. Why is no one talking about it?

Their backing track is the most improved act.

First song - badly off key, second song - didn't sing as a band, no harmonies just individual sections.
