Nokia X7-00 Leak
Dyna201
28-11-2010
Well today I was reading a Tech blog for my Android phone apps and I found some interesting article about Nokia X7-00 leak here:

Nokia X7-00 leak

After reading, I can say Nokia is now working hard to put some good smartphones in 2011!

What's your thoughts about Nokia X7.

It still seems to have the same old Symbian on board. Yet another Nokia release which is aimed primarily at Nokia customers alone.

Did you watch the full video or just look at pics? The video shows an updated version of Symbian which has 4 homescreens instead of 3. Also menus open faster compared to other Nokia phones such as 5800XM and N8.

Its still the same old Symbian to me. They may do lots of things under the hood but the look and feel is still the same. Having recently tried the N8, im happy to say that they are still stuck in a rut. And no, im not an iphone or android fan...im open to all the platforms.

Try actually owning the phone then trying it in shop.

The whole UI can be customized. The wallpaper can be changed. Icons can be changed. Menu layout can be changed. Fonts can be changed. If you don't like it you can change it to what you like.

Why would I need to own something that I hate in paper and in person? I think the general opinion is that Nokia need to stop polishing the proverbial turd that is Symbian and instead focus on creating something brand new that will appeal to the mass market instead of the Nokia faithful.

For someone open to all platforms...you are closed to symbian.

I thought that would be obvious given the last few posts...but obviously not clear enough for some.

I can't understand why someone can use words like 'hate' in connection with an operating system. It rather weakens the argument.

This is where you start to loose any credibility. You hate something based on just a few minutes of messing around with one in a shop. Thats barely valid.

In real world usage, Symbian is easily as good as, if not actually better than either Android or Symbian.

Sure, Nokia have made some bizarre choices - same icons and fonts that they've had for years, but apart from that it all works considerably better than what they've done before, and is easily on par with the Android and iOS competition.

Right, so let me get this straight. Ive used the N8 (5800 as well which is clearly much worse) and absolutely hated it. WHY would I want to continue using or even explore future handsets if i thought it was awful? That doesnt make sense to me.

In my opinion (if im allowed one of those, obviously), its miles behind its competition and that shows by the fact that customers are ignoring the platform in favour of its rivals.

You don't like, and of course you're entitled to your opinion.

Just out of interest, what did you hate about it?

Oh, and customers aren't ignoring it - Symbian as a whole is still the best selling Smartphone platform in the world. Its just that Android is gaining sales faster than anyone else.

Well I thought this was going to be about the new OS that Nokia is working on. As someone who still onws a 5800 (although passed on to my OH) and has dabbled with the N8 I am not anti Symbian but to me after using Android for the last 2 months it would be a step backwards to have any Symbian device.

Why don't Nokia just embrace Android - then we would have the best hardware manufacturer with the best OS. I would definitely be interested if they did.

There is no reason for Nokia to embrace Android at all - its definitely not the best OS, and only really improves on the flexibility of the homescreen.

They'd just become another box shifter, which is definitely not something they want to get into. Heck, why not suggest Apple goes Android for the same reasons?

In the past year I've had the 5230, which was surprisingly good (way better than the 5800 was on release), then onto the ZTE Blade. Which was a good device, after having moved to the N8, I prefer it on about every possible level.

But each to their own

There are two things Symbian is backwards on and that is the browser and text input method.

Both of these things are getting a new makeover and should be here in Feburary.

Maybe earlier, I'm under the impression that its supposedly being readied for before the E7 launch?

Text input isn't too bad right now - if you install swype you get a much improved landscape keyboard, and there are portrait qwerty solutions currently available.

But then I'm a luddite, I still like T9 entry ... I seem to always have to send a text when I'm on the treadmill, T9 tends to be a little easier to deal with when your moving a little ...

Indeed each to there own. I just see Nokia being left with Symbian on their own as both SE & Samsung have now dropped it. They could easily put out the best Android phone and Android is now a selling plus for phones. Nokia do risk being left outside the party. However I will wait and see what this new OS is like they are developing when I get a new phone next year.

As for the Blade (£99) aginst the N8 (~£400) well there SHOULD be no competition. While the Orange San Francisco is OK I have rooted, debranded and flashed a FroYo rom and it is a super smooth fast device and does, for me (apps & web), way more than the N8. However the camera is crap and the battery could be better.

Why should their be no competition between them? The OS on the Android is the vanilla version of one of the main competitors .... but the Blade is just too slow for any decent apps (or at least some of them ran truly lousy). But it was a useful comparsion of the OS and basic features.

Just like you, I was extremely unimpressed with the battery life, and the camera was probably left off - it was completely incapable of taking a picture of anything that was even slightly moving.

Yes, Android has more apps and a better browsing experience, but for me at least the main phone functionality (and battery life) is way ahead on Symbian - which is (again, for me at least) the main function of a phone ....
