It's not Ann who's entertaining...
who, me?
29-11-2010
...It's the production built around her, IMO. Flying, mist-and-foghorns, Anton's increasingly bizarre outfits (and great humour). Ann has a fair line in repartee, but her dancing is not entertaining. The big build up each week leaves me feeling that the actual experience is anti-climactic.

Anton or whoever realised there's no chance she'd stay on the show based on her dancing after a novelty of having a politician on SCD wears off. Thus the 'comedy'. I would not be surprised if she actually put on weight during the show and Anton put his back out one of these days.

There is a lady columnist on one of the tabloids (sorry, didn't notice if Mail or Mirror or elsewhere) who remarked that Anton was already complaining of aching back and knees.
OK, journos are capable of making things up, but this was a side-remark, not a blown up story to fill space. Possibly a smidgen of truth in it, therefore.

Anton is swirling round dead weight. If you look at pros dancing, the ladies often jump into lifts or help with arms, body postures to balance their body weight etc But Anton on more than one occasion has been hauling up dead weight on the floor and twirling it. I said weeks ago that I had worries about his back, and I think I may be right.

I wonder which - if any - of the pros would be prepared to take up the reins if Anton did himself a serious mischief and had to retire?

Anton could probably help us all out by feigning a back injury before it actually happens. Ann would not dance with anyone else I'm sure, even if they could find a volunteer. Alas, I suspect he wants to win it too!

I know as a dancer he is fit but I agree there is a concern he may be fit for nothing dancing-wise after this. It's gone too far now and is expecting too much from him or any other pro.

The journalist - whoever is was - isn't making it up. Anton has mentioned his back and knees to other dancers - not necessarily just those involved with the show.

I genuinely think he has more than had enough now - his face when Tess announced their names as going through last Saturday was definitely one of "oh no......." before he put the big fake smile back in place.

When Kara and Artem were talking about Artem's injury in this week's VT, Anton butted in to make some comments comparing lifting Ann and Kara. Anton said it in a very joking manner but I'm sure there was a lot of truth to it.

Hmm, interesting. If she danced with a stand in, at least we'd have an idea if people are voting for Ann because she's entertaining, or Anton, for putting up with it. Take Anton out of the equation I am sure she'd be bottom two.

But he doesn't have to put the lifts in the routines does he? He could actually make her do some dancing, she might get bored then and want to be voted out.

Yes, but they're doing the American Smooth next week , so he's somehow got to get THREE lifts into the routine. I suggest a hoist, block and tackle...

Exactly. One dance lifting a fat, old woman was barely smile-able (I speak as a fat middle-aged woman who does not find jokes about weight that funny. On the other hand, I'd never dream of agreeing to go on such a programme.) but week on week, with increasing grimacing and hamming is awfully dull. Laugh? I thought I'd never start.

1st post.. evening all. and apologies if my points have already been raised.

IMO Anton is a comedy genius and this series will do his future career nothing but good. I've long held an opinion he should take over from Brucie and this reinforces it.

I don't particually enjoy Widdicombe and find her back chat to the judges mostly embarrasing ( I suspect Anton does too) however I'm enjoying their progress for his sake.

If the judges are going to abuse the marking system as they undoubtably do, then they shouldn't be surprised if the voting veiwers decide to directly oppose them.

3 lifts? Then it's back to the harness, then, which should count for 3 lifts in one.
Seriously, though, at this stage the Widdy has GOT to learn a few proper steps and learn how to execute them.
Anton could always get her to do a Viennese waltz and make it REALLY fast!
