Should a professional use swear words when teaching?
I admit I was shocked to hear Matt having to tell Aliona not to swear in his face.
I think this is not an acceptable way for a professional dancer to behave when teaching. I certainly would not take this from any teacher if I was learning. |

No, a professional probably shouldn't swear whilst teaching but..Strictly is a different situation to a professional dance class or even a one to one.
The two of them spend hours together in short amount of time and are under an intense amount of pressure. Also the little VTs are edited each week to sell and tell a certain story about each couple, and whilst I don't doubt that they get the gist of things they obviously don't say everything about the two of them and how they interact. So, I think that we can excuse Aliona this, as it's entirely possible that it was just a bad day. If it were happening every day, than that would be different. |

I am not a great fan of swearing at any time, and I would think in one to one teaching that its extremely counter productive and shows a lack of discipline and control. I can fully understand that some of the pros might very well feel like swearing and throwing things in frustration sometimes but it should be kept outside the training room and not in front of the celeb.
On DWTS they have occasionally shown huge bust ups between the couples on VT's and one Pro this year was openly criticised by the judges during the show for reducing his celeb to tears. They said that they didnt approve of those kind of training methods. I suppose in the end it depends on how strong your celeb is and whether anger or frustration shown by the pro will affect their confidence or not. In the case that has sparked this thread Matt is a strong enough individual to say something to Aliona but then she treated his remarks and disquiet by just swearing again in his face. Some people would find that difficult to deal with and it would affect a relationship in the long run. So in summary NO dont swear at your celeb (or vice verse) |

I can only imagine from his reaction that he had never heard her swear before, so I assume it was a one off and frustration had got the better of her!

Probably best not to do so on camera to avoid trouble (I presume they're not filmed all day every day?) but aside from that it depends on the person you're teaching- most wouldn't respond well to being sworn at, but for some it might help.
And of course everyone occasionally has a bad day and comes out with something they shouldn't. I'm sure there have been plenty of "#*@% get off my toe!" moments. |

She could at least do it in Russian and not make it so offensive. But it just went to show how sweet Matt is, complete darling.

You're winding us up? You should have been in the Army they had no difficulty mixing a choice vocabulary with instruction. This is complete crud something took out of context gets aired on National TV. I have never worked anywhere where the odd four letter word was not used.

It depends on the relationship between teacher/pupil (or coach/athlete). A good coach/teacher will find the most appropriate way of getting their message home.
Between adults, a robust exchange of views is often extremely helpful! Sometimes, a swear word from an otherwise "nicely spoken" person can really emphasise how seriously they consider the point they're making. It is unusual in a SCD context though, or rather Matt's reaction was sufficiently unusual to warrant being shown. I'll guess there's hours of colourful language on the cutting room floor that is discarded simply because it's inappropriate to broadcast pre watershed rather than because it's considered significant. (Swearing at kids in the teaching/coaching relationship is never acceptable though.) |

Well its not the army and not an acceptable way to teach. I think it's disgraceful. You would never get this behavour from the great pros , Matt, Darren,Ian, Erin, Camilla.
There's no reason to believe that dance training is any different in this respect. Horses for courses. |

I personally don't mind but Matt obviously did so in those circumstances, she should be mindful.

And you know this because you've seen all their training footage. I've no idea if they have, or haven't, sworn during training sessions, and neither do you. Yes, I'd find it difficult to imagine some of them swearing, doesn't mean it has, or indeed, hasn't happened.
What a ridiculous thread. |

I'll guess swearing wouldn't be a good way to get the best out of you when being taught (which is fine, as we all have our own styles) but plenty of sports people swear by (no pun intended) their coaches who use appalling language.
There's no reason to believe that dance training is any different in this respect. Horses for courses. But in this situation, Matt's reaction shows that Aliona clearly got it wrong. She should 'get' him enough by now to know that he would be offended rather than motivated. |

I think the odd outburst given the circumstances is fairly excusable. However if it's a regular thing well I would suggest that Aliona reassess her teaching style ( now there's a shocker). I've worked in schools for quite a while now and was always told that if you start shouting at children then you've lost. I'd presume that it's a similar thing with swearing at adults.
It's what put me off watching Dancing on Wheels, it just wasn't necessary and was never going to encourage anyone, quite the opposite in fact - a lousy way to teach no matter how 'passionate' you are. |

I don't like swearing, but at the same time, they're all adults on the show, and however well intended everyone is, when you are practising really hard, and maybe things are not working so well, frustration hits in, and words slip out.
At the same time, I don't think anyone should get too precious about it, nor take any of the training VTs too seriously. They all know the cameras are on them, and will say/do things for effect. [If you want to hear real swearing while dancing - go to a world class championship and hear some of the language going around the ballroom floor as couples try and dodge each other, while looking as if butter wouldn't melt ................] |

The more I see of Aliona's training sessions, the more convinced I become that she's not got a natural gift for teaching.
She gets impatient very quickly and was extremely rude to Matt. She was the same with Rav, but it's clear to me now that it wasn't just because he was rubbish and a slow learner. I can't imagine being filled with much joy at the prospect of a day of training with Aliona. |

We are all human and all get frustrated and I am sure all guilty of a lapse in manners at times .
