Another curious thing is that it's high marks -- 9s and especially 10s -- that bring out the accusations of over-marking, but it makes no difference at all re who stays whether the judges use the top marks or ones lower down. All that matters is the differences among each judge's marks.
(If a judge gives every couple a 9, for example, or every couple a 3, that judge makes no difference to the end result. (It should be obvious that the final order doesn't change if a 9 is added to every couple's score.) If the judge gives every couple but one a 3 and one couple a 4, that helps the couple to exactly the same extent as if the judge had used 9s and a 10 instead, or 6s and a 7. And so on. It's only the differences among each judge's own marks that can make a difference to who stays or goes.)
