Anyone got any good ways to measure one portion of rice from a bag of rice?

I'm always getting it wrong, under estimating how puffy the rice gets and ending up with a pan full of the stuff.

Any tips? I tried using a cup but still ended up with too much.

Try half a teacup for one person. It is difficult to say how much is one portion as some like a lot and some want a small amount.

Experts say measure out 50 grams.

For a small meal I use 1/4 cup and for a large meal I use 1/3 cup. I bought some cheap measuring cups & spoons and they do come in handy.

If I was going to buy any again i'd get the multi-coloured ones for quick ease of use.

Are there experts in this kind of thing?

Interesting job.

If you look on the packet, it should give you a guide. On Uncle Ben's Wholegrain packet it states 62.5gr per portion.

That's just silly!

Personally I can estimate it quite well using a bit less than a mug per two people. This is far from scientific though

My philosophy is that rice is so cheap that it's better to make too much than too little and any leftovers can always be reused.

I sympathise with the OP. A standard ramekin is just about right for 2 people.

For basmati rice use 1 ramekin of rice to 1.5 ramekins of water.

Wash the rice a couple of times and let it drain until dry.

Meanwhile put the measured water into a saucepan with a drop of olive oil and a hint of salt.

Bring to the boil and the shove in your rice, give it a quick stir, and then put the lid on and turn down the heat so it barely simmers for 15 mins. After 15 mins turn off the heat and leave the rice for another 5 mins.

Lift the lid, give it a stir with a fork and serve.

Deluge with balti and it will be bostin!

I agree with most people here. For 2 people I use 1 cup (american) then use 2 cups of boiling water. I don't bother rinsing and soaking basmati rice just straight in.

I boil rapidly for about 6 mins with a lid on, then heat off and just leave it for about 10 to fifteen. It will just absorb the rest of the water and keep warm. Then i just fluff it up with a fork.

I used to really hate cooking rice and went for microwave rice. This method never fails me.

wow I seem to do it wrong. I pour look add a bit remove a bit. Boil kettle pour on top until covered. I've always gone for double the amount of water to rice. My mum used to use a teacup - I don't own one of these.

I use 4 tbsp per person. This equates to about 60g each.

Me sister when she worked at our local hospital was always invited round for curries etc by the doctors she worked with (indian, pakistanis), this was many years years ago now about the 70's they always gave her tips on rice cooking, What ever you use 1 mug,cup etc just double up on the water using the same mug,cup etc....bring water to boil add the rice,,,bring to the boil.....then turn the heat off and forget it .......always beautiful fluffy rice...

Failing that (same measures) bring pan of water to boil add rice.....let it cook for a bit..drain well then place in ovenproof dish cover with foil or lid......place in a very low warm oven.....

75g to 250ml water, per person - that's what i use (though i've never actually done the whole "lets see where this goes to in a cup so I don't have to faff about with scales forevermore" thing yet!!)
